“Assi” Movie Review
One rape happens every 20 minutes, and 80 rapes happen in 24 hours. That is why this film is called “Assi”
If you ever have to watch just one film in your life, even if you do not like Bollywood, do not like Hindi films, or have no interest in films, please watch this film. This film made me feel very disgusted and disturbed.
I was shaken being a father of twins, A boy and a girl. So I had both feelings while watching his film. It is an extremely disturbing film. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. My phone was in my pocket. Usually, that does not happen.
The story shown by Anubhav Sinha have shakeden me from inside.
A school teacher is raped. Then the case goes to court. What happens after that?
The motive of the film is not to blame any political parties, police, education, or any other departments. However, this film raises questions. Questions that should be raised. The way things are shown in this film, you feel shocked, scared, and surprised. You will start worrying about your family, as I did and will keep doing it for the rest of my life. This much impact has made on my soul and mind after watching this film.
You may even take out your phone in the interval and message them to ask if they are okay.
The rawness and boldness of the film, the background music, and the camera angles make the experience more dangerous and more deadly.
The dialogue of the film is exceptional. In one of the dialogues, when the rape victim Parima) played by Kani Kusruti was in the hospital, and her husband (Vinay) played by Zeeshan Ayub, and her son played by Advik Jaiswal were in the hospital, and Kartik played by Kumud Mishra comes into the hospital and says that “Yaar bacche ko hospital main kyo laya, usko ghar par rakhta,” Vinay looked at Parima and says “Yeh sab ghar hi aane vala hai”.
This shows the intensity and depth of the dialogue. This means that when a woman is raped, not only is she raped, but the whole family is raped and becomes a victim forever.
In one scene, the school principal, played by Seema Pahwa, says that “our school result is the best, but the whole school has failed.” Another heartfelt dialogue.
If I talk about performances, Taapsee Pannu has shown why she is one of the best actresses in India. Taapsee is an actress with a strong attitude. She has strong opinions. She lives life on her own terms. And an actress like her was needed for this role. She is the face of women-driven cinema. She has proved this again. The chemistry between Anubhav Sinha and Tapsi is great on and off the screen.
Kumud Mishra has lost a lot of weight, and now he looks awesome in this movie. When you see Kumud Mishra, you may feel this is not him, maybe his duplicate. The way he has played this role is awesome. You have to admire him in this role, and his performance, and after watching this, you will fall in love with his acting.
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, whose wife is raped in the film, takes his child to court. Someone asks him why he brought the child to court. He says, what child? He has grown up. That moment tells you he is one of the best actors in India. The way Zeeshan has played this character proves that he is one of the best actors.

Kani Kusruti is a Malayalam actress, and I was a little sceptical about her Hindi, but she has spoken very little and has performed with her expressions. The way she makes you feel the pain of a rape victim, you experience her pain through her face, her eyes, and her words.
Apart from them, all the actors have done amazing work. Satyajit Sharma, who plays the opposition lawyer, meaning the lawyer for the accused, has done such powerful acting that he takes the film to another level.
The rest of the supporting actors, such as Manoj Pahwa and Revathi, as a judge, impress a lot. Advik Jaiswal, the child whose mother is raped, is present in court. Often, we make films for children and give them certificates. But here, children are standing in court.
This film shows you every side of this issue, from the husband’s side, the son’s side, accuded parents’ angle, what problems police have to face, a judge who has to give the judgment, etc.
We often say that rapists should be hanged till death. This film also talks about why that should happen and why it should not happen.
Anubhav Sinha has written this story with Gaurav Solanki. They have written it in such a way that it hurts you. You feel pain. You feel disturbed. There are no very long dialogues, but the ones that are there shake you deeply.
Anubhav Sinha’s direction is excellent. He shows how a film should be carried and how filmmaking should be done. He does not just tell you, he shows you. He has made great films before. He made Bheed, which was a very good film. He has made a film that you will not forget. It will stay in your mind.
The last scene of the film, where the boy was standing on the first floor and looking down, this shot is taken as if we are looking through the eyes of that small boy. This cinematography is just amazing.
From my side, I give this film 4 stars out of 5. I cut one star only because there is always room for improvement in life and in films. I am sure Taapsee, Anubhav Sinha, Kumud Mishra, Zeeshan Ayyub, and all the artists in this film will keep on doing such great work forever. They have raised their own level very high and have set the benchmark for their performance.
