BAOU NCVET Recognition Sets New Hope in Gujarat
Proud Moment for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University & Gujarat!
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University has been officially recognised as an Awarding Body (Dual Category) by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, India
BAOU is now the first University & Higher Education Institution from Gujarat to receive this prestigious recognition, setting a new benchmark in the state for skill-integrated higher education.
This step comes at a time when India is putting a strong focus on skill-based learning. Reports from national education bodies show that many graduates still struggle to find jobs due to a gap between classroom learning and real work skills. With this recognition, BAOU joins a select group of institutions that are trusted to reduce this gap. Experts in the education sector have often said that universities must move beyond theory. BAOU’s move shows that Gujarat is ready to take that shift seriously.
What this means:
Authority to train, assess & certify learners for NSQF-aligned qualifications
Capability to conduct independent assessments
Stronger alignment with industry needs & employability
The National Skills Qualifications Framework, often called NSQF, is a system used across India to match skills with job roles. Many employers now prefer candidates with NSQF-aligned training because it shows practical ability, not just academic marks. By becoming an awarding body, BAOU can now directly design and deliver such courses.
Independent assessment is another major step. In many training systems, teaching and testing are handled by different bodies to ensure fairness. BAOU now has the ability to manage both while following strict national guidelines. This will help students get quicker results and recognised certificates. It will also make the process smoother for learners in rural and remote areas, where access to testing centres is often limited.
Industry experts have long pointed out that skill-based education increases employability. Sectors like healthcare, retail, IT services, and construction are always looking for trained workers. With this recognition, BAOU can work closely with industries to design courses that match real job needs. This means students are more likely to find work soon after finishing their training.
Under the visionary leadership of Ami Upadhyay, Vice Chancellor, BAOU continues to redefine education by integrating skills, innovation, and inclusivity. Her focus on empowering youth, women, and underserved communities is driving meaningful impact and creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods & entrepreneurship.
Education experts often stress that open universities play a key role in reaching those who cannot attend regular colleges. BAOU has been known for its flexible learning model. Under Prof. Ami Upadhyay, there has been a stronger push towards skill-based programmes, especially for women and rural learners. Studies show that when women gain vocational skills, family income improves and communities grow stronger.
There has also been a growing demand for short-term, job-ready courses. Many young people prefer courses that can help them start earning within months. BAOU’s approach fits this need. By combining open learning with skill training, the university is making education more practical and accessible.
The agreement was formalised in the presence of distinguished representatives from NCVET, including Devashri Mukharji, President, NCVET, Ashok Kumar Gaba, Member, NCVET, and Vikram Singh Bhati, Secretary to the Council cum Director, NCVET. Representing BAOU were Prof. Ami Upadhyay, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nilesh Modi, Director, Centre for Internal Quality Assurance and Dr Maheshprasad Trivedi, Director, Academic.
Such collaborations between universities and national bodies are becoming more common in India. Government reports have highlighted that partnerships help maintain quality and ensure that training meets national standards. When senior officials from NCVET attend such agreements, it shows strong trust in the institution. It also means that BAOU will be closely guided and monitored to maintain high standards.
This milestone strengthens India’s vision of a future-ready, skilled workforce and positions BAOU as a key contributor to the national skilling ecosystem.
India aims to train millions of young people in the coming years under its skill development plans. A large part of this effort depends on institutions like BAOU. With its wide reach and open learning system, the university can connect with learners who are often left out of traditional education.
For Gujarat, this is more than just an academic achievement. It places the state on the map as a leader in skill-integrated education. It also sends a strong message that education must lead to real opportunities.
For students, the impact is simple and clear. You can now study, gain skills, and get certified from a trusted university, all in one place. That makes your path to a job or self-employment much easier and faster.
