BJP Puts Forward a Tamil Face in a Bid to Strengthen Southern Strategy. Is the C.P. Radhakrishnan Nomination a Strategic Move?
BJP, India’s ruling party, has nominated Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan for the vice presidential post. This decision came shortly after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down. The party’s president, J.P. Nadda, announced the nomination, highlighting a hopeful stance for a unanimous election. The nomination of C.P. Radhakrishnan, a well-known politician with strong ties to the RSS, is seen as a strategic step to appeal to voters in Tamil Nadu before the state’s upcoming assembly elections.

Radhakrishnan, whose full name is Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, was appointed Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024. He was the Governor of Jharkhand from February 18, 2023, to July 30, 2024.
The Vice President of India is a very important position. The person holding this role is the second-highest constitutional officer in the country, right after the President. One of the main jobs of the Vice President is to act as the President if the President can’t do their job because of things like sickness, leaving their job, or death. The Vice President can serve as the acting President for up to six months until a new President is elected.
Radhakrishnan was born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. He joined the RSS when he was a teenager.

To become the Vice President of India, a person must be an Indian citizen, at least 35 years old, and be qualified to be a member of the Rajya Sabha. They must not hold any “office of profit” under the government. The Vice President’s role is also different from the President’s. While the President is the head of the country, the Vice President’s main job is to be the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, which is one of the two houses of India’s Parliament. The Vice President makes sure the meetings of the Rajya Sabha run smoothly and keeps order.
He was the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president from 2004 to 2007.
The Vice President is elected by members of an “electoral college.” This college is made up of all the members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Unlike the President’s election, the members of the state legislative assemblies do not vote for the Vice President. The election is done by a system called proportional representation with a single transferable vote, and the voting is secret. This is different from a regular election, where you just vote for one person. It’s a special system where voters rank the candidates they like best.
Besides being the Governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand, he was also given extra jobs as the Governor of Telangana from March to July 2024 and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from March to August 2024.
When the Vice President acts as the President, they stop doing their duties as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. During this time, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha takes over the role. This shows that the two jobs are separate and can’t be done at the same time. The Vice President gets the same salary and benefits as the President when they are acting in that role.
Radhakrishnan thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the nomination and the chance to serve the country.
The BJP has a strong position to win the election because the NDA has a lot of votes in the electoral college. This means they can win even if the opposition puts up their own candidate. The BJP’s choice of C.P. Radhakrishnan is a way to show respect to Tamil Nadu and try to get more support in the southern part of India.
J.P. Nadda said the BJP talked about Radhakrishnan’s nomination with all the parties in the NDA. The party also plans to talk to the opposition to try and have an unopposed election.
The election for Vice President is usually held before the current Vice President’s term ends. If the position becomes empty for some other reason, like a resignation, a new election is held as soon as possible. The new Vice President then serves a full five-year term, not just the rest of the old term.
The article also notes that Radhakrishnan visited Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on August 11.
The Vice President holds their job for five years. They can be re-elected for any number of terms. The first Vice President of India, S. Radhakrishnan, and Mohammad Hamid Ansari both served two full terms.
