Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today shared his pride and happiness about India hosting the famous FIDE World Cup 2025. This event marks the return of the chess World Cup to India after more than 20 years.
Replying to a post by the International Chess Federation on X, the Prime Minister said:
“India is very happy to host the FIDE World Cup 2025, that too after more than two decades. Chess is becoming very popular among our young people. I am sure this tournament will bring exciting matches, and the world’s best players will show their talent.”Each round lasts three days: two days of classical games and, if needed, a third day of rapid and blitz tie-breaks The top 50 players—based on FIDE ratings—get a bye and start from round two, while the rest (ranked 51 to 206) play from round one
The top three finishers in this World Cup will win a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, a crucial step toward challenging for the World Chess Championship India already has at least 20 qualified players, including rising stars like D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, and veterans like Vishy Anand Gukesh is even the reigning World Chess Champion, though he won’t need a Candidates spot—he plays for pride, prize money, and rating FIDE—the International Chess Federation, known by its French name Fédération Internationale des Échecs—has its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland and has been the global governing body for chess tournaments since 1924
