FIFA World Cup: Spain Beat France to Reach the Final, Mbappé’s Dream Ends

Spain has reached the FIFA World Cup final after beating France. In the semi-final at Dallas Stadium, Spain defeated the favourites with a strong performance.

Luis de la Fuente’s team kept France’s star-filled attack under control throughout the match. There were not many chances, but Spain stayed in control and secured their place in Sunday’s final thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro.

Spain won a penalty midway through the first half. France left-back Lucas Digne made a mistake while trying to clear the ball and crashed into forward Lamine Yamal. The referee awarded a penalty.

Oyarzabal calmly sent the penalty into the corner of the net. After taking the lead, Spain took even more control of the match.

France had a poor first half, and many expected them to come back strongly after the break. Instead, the opposite happened. Spain once again controlled the game.

Pedro Porro played a clever one-two pass with Dani Olmo before scoring Spain’s second goal from close range.

France still had a little over 30 minutes to fight back, but they could not break down Spain’s well-organised defence.

Spain has now conceded only one goal in the whole tournament.

Until the final whistle of this FIFA 2026 World Cup semi-final, Spain stayed calm, composed and played excellent football to seal a comfortable victory.

France’s dream of reaching a third straight World Cup final ended with this defeat. They will now play in Saturday’s third-place match. It will also be the final tournament of coach Didier Deschamps’ 14 year spell in charge, as he will leave the team after the competition.

Spain will now travel to New Jersey, where they will wait for the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal between England and Argentina.

Spain will now aim to win the World Cup for the second time.

This match was seen as a battle between the strongest attacking team in the tournament and the best defensive team.

In the end, however, the match was one-sided. Spain’s defenders kept France star Kylian Mbappé quiet and stopped him from becoming a danger for his team.

France had impressed everyone with their attack throughout the tournament. Spain, on the other hand, quietly went about their work with calm and balanced football. Their style may not have been the most exciting, but if anyone had any doubts about their quality, those doubts should now be gone.

Spain’s biggest strength during their Euro 2024-winning campaign was the brilliant wing play of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

This time, injuries have limited their impact, and together they have scored only one goal so far. Even so, Lamine Yamal’s influence has grown as the tournament has gone on.

Spain has reached only their second World Cup final. They will now try to match the great 2010 team that won the World Cup in South Africa.

Rodri was outstanding in midfield against France. He stopped many attacks early, helped build Spain’s attacks and controlled the pace of the match.

After spending a long time out with a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury, he now looks close to the level that won him the Ballon d’Or in 2024.

Fabian Ruiz also played very well. He proved that the decision to pick him instead of Barcelona playmaker Pedri was the right one. Spain’s defence once again showed its strength.

This was not only because of the defenders and the goalkeeper. The whole team and coach De la Fuente’s tactics played a big part. France had to wait until the 81st minute before they managed their first shot on target.

People often say that the team that wins a major tournament is the one that plays its best football at the right time. After the way Spain beat such a strong France side, it looks as if they are reaching their best at exactly the right moment.

At many points in this World Cup, it seemed only a matter of time before France would lift the trophy.

Led by Kylian Mbappé, France’s attack, full of star players, had been in excellent form throughout the tournament. The team reached the semi-finals with ease.

In the knockout stage, France comfortably beat Sweden, showed patience and discipline to defeat a strong Paraguay side, and then easily overcame Morocco.

Alongside Mbappé were Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé, double Champions League winner Bradley Barcola and Desire Doué. Even if Mbappé did not have his best day, France still had several players who could change the match.

This time, however, it did not happen. Spain played brilliantly, but France also produced their weakest performance of the tournament. The team that had been known for fast and attacking football looked ineffective in this match.

Lucas Digne’s mistake left France behind for the first time in the tournament. A few minutes later, William Saliba went off injured, making things even harder for the team.

France came into the match hoping to give their dangerous attackers the freedom to play, but that never happened. Spain’s excellent tactics, especially in the second half, made sure that France’s key players only received the ball in areas where they could be stopped easily.

It felt as though one goal could have changed the match for France. However, Spain controlled the game both with and without the ball, making it very difficult for France to create chances.

France had played exciting football throughout the tournament, but their campaign ended in a very disappointing way.

The team had hoped to give coach Didier Deschamps a perfect farewell by winning his second World Cup title.

Instead, his final match in charge will be the play-off for third place.

Mbappé will still have a chance in that match to improve his position in the race for the Golden Boot. He could also become the highest goalscorer in World Cup history. However, the trophy that he and France came here to win will now have to wait another four years.
