Adani Sportsline Appoints Simon Helmot as Head Coach of Gulf Giants for Upcoming UAE ILT20 Season.

Adani Sportsline today announced the appointment of veteran Australian cricket strategist Simon Helmot as Head Coach of the Gulf Giants ahead of the upcoming season of the DP World UAE ILT20.

Helmot brings more than two decades of experience across domestic, international and franchise cricket, including assignments in some of the world’s leading T20 leagues. He has been associated with the Hyderabad side in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2013 and has contributed to multiple title-winning campaigns across leading T20 tournaments in Australia, the Caribbean and the UAE. Over the years, he has earned a strong reputation for building high-performance team environments and maximising player potential in pressure situations.

People close to franchise cricket often describe Helmot as a calm and smart coach who understands modern T20 cricket very well. His coaching style focuses on clear planning, player confidence and simple communication. Former players and cricket experts have praised his ability to get the best out of both young and experienced cricketers during high-pressure tournaments. His long stay with Hyderabad in the IPL also shows the trust the franchises place in his methods and cricket knowledge.

Before this appointment, Mr Helmot completed a five-season tenure with Melbourne Renegades, leading the team to its maiden Women’s Big Bash League title in 2024.

That title win became one of the biggest moments in the history of the Melbourne Renegades women’s side. Under Helmot, the team recovered strongly after difficult seasons and built a balanced squad with strong leadership and disciplined bowling. Cricket Australia reports, and Australian cricket media widely praised the culture he created inside the dressing room. Many experts said the title was a result of patience, planning and strong player backing from the coaching staff.

As part of his onboarding with Gulf Giants, Mr Helmot recently met Mr Pranav Adani, Director, Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), in Ahmedabad to discuss the long-term vision for Gulf Giants and the franchise’s preparations for the upcoming ILT20 season.

The Gulf Giants franchise has quickly become one of the recognised teams in the UAE league since the tournament began in 2023. The side won the inaugural ILT20 title in its very first season under former coach Andy Flower and captain James Vince. Their strong start helped the franchise build a loyal fan base in the UAE and among international cricket followers. The management has continued to focus on experienced coaches and international stars to keep the team competitive.

Speaking on his appointment, Mr Helmot said: “I’m excited to join Gulf Giants and be part of the next phase of the franchise’s journey in the UAE ILT20. My discussions with Mr Pranav Adani reflected Adani Sportsline’s long-term commitment towards building strong sporting ecosystems, nurturing talent and creating competitive teams. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff as we build towards a successful season.”

Cricket observers believe Helmot’s experience in franchise cricket could help the Gulf Giants return strongly after mixed performances in recent seasons. While the team remained competitive, they also faced difficult matches and inconsistency during the previous ILT20 campaign. Close games against teams like Desert Vipers and Dubai Capitals exposed areas where the side needed stronger finishing and better match control. Helmot is expected to focus on these areas before the new season begins.

Mr Pranav Adani said, “We are pleased to welcome Simon to Gulf Giants and the Adani Sportsline family. Simon brings deep experience across global franchise cricket, a strong understanding of the T20 ecosystem and a proven ability to build competitive, high-performing teams. His leadership approach and focus on player development align closely with our long-term vision for the Gulf Giants, and we look forward to the upcoming season under his guidance.”

Adani Sportsline has continued to increase its presence in sports through teams and leagues in cricket, kabaddi and other competitions. Sports industry experts say franchise owners are now placing greater emphasis on long-term planning, youth development, and strong support systems rather than solely on short-term success. Helmot’s appointment appears to fit this broader vision of building stable, competitive sports teams over many years.

Since its launch in 2023, the UAE ILT20 has quickly emerged as one of the world’s leading franchise T20 leagues, featuring top international players, coaches and franchises from major cricketing nations.

The league has also helped strengthen cricket in the UAE by giving local players the chance to share dressing rooms with international stars. Former England batter Jonathan Trott had earlier spoken about how the ILT20 could play a major role in improving UAE cricket standards and helping local talent grow faster. The tournament’s growing popularity has also attracted coaches and players from Australia, England, India, South Africa and the Caribbean.

Gulf Giants also thanked former Head Coach Jonathan Trott for his leadership and contribution during the previous season and wished him continued success for the future. Trott had joined the franchise ahead of the last season and brought international coaching experience after his successful work with Afghanistan cricket. His time with the Gulf Giants helped continue the franchise’s strong professional structure before the latest coaching transition.
