Ishan Kishan, India’s wicketkeeper-batsman, says the T20I series against the West Indies taught him a lot. Kishan blasted an explosive 89 off 57 balls in the opening T20I against Sri Lanka on Thursday (February 24), studded with ten fours and three sixes, to lay the foundation for India’s decisive 62-run victory.

Kishan’s innings surpassed Rishabh Pant’s 65 not out against the West Indies in 2019 as the highest score by an Indian wicketkeeper in T20 cricket. After all of his batting prowess, former India captain MS Dhoni just has one top score in T20 cricket: 56 against England in Bengaluru in 2017. With ten fours in his 89-run innings, Ishan holds the record for most fours by an Indian batsman. In a T20I inning, the wicketkeeper is the most important player. In 2015, Robin Uthappa smashed nine-fours against Zimbabwe.

Kishan’s performance against the West Indies, who struggled to get going and scored just 71 runs in three innings, was a far cry. “The West Indies series taught me a great deal. My motivation wasn’t strong enough, and I wasn’t upbeat enough. “I was just trying to keep it simple here – watch the ball and play my shots,” Kishan remarked after receiving the ‘Player of the Match award at the post-match ceremony.

“Pull is my favorite stroke; I enjoy playing that shot,” Kishan said when asked about his standout shot from the thrilling knock.

In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year, Kishan was content with matches being placed in larger stadiums at home. “It’s also good for the batting unit because you need to smash gaps in order to prepare for the World Cup in Australia.” Larger borders are beneficial since we have a lot of gaps.

“I was discussing the mid-wicket region with Shreyas (Iyer).” He claimed that if you center the ball, you can get a boundary. You can get two if you hit the gaps. And it moved in my direction.”

In the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Thursday, India skipper Rohit Sharma was overjoyed to witness left-handed opener Kishan’s sparkling 89. He went on to say he was pleased with Kishan’s approach to establishing his innings.

“I’ve known Ishan for quite some time. I understand his thinking. I’m aware of his abilities as well. It was simply a matter of getting the kind of game he had today. From the other side, it was a joy to witness. That is normally his difficulty, but the way he crafted the innings was so excellent. “It wasn’t just about coming in and striking the ball; it was also about locating the spaces,” Sharma said after the game.
