After inspiring cities across India — from Lucknow to Chandigarh, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam, Bengaluru, Guwahati, and Kolkata — the SBI Green Marathon Season 6 arrived in the heart of Gujarat: Ahmedabad. The iconic Sabarmati Riverfront came alive at sunrise, transforming into a vibrant celebration of runners, families, fitness communities, and sustainability champions united by one purpose — to run for the planet.

The Sabarmati Riverfront has, over the years, emerged as one of India’s finest examples of urban renewal and sustainable public space. Its wide promenades, green patches, and riverfront ecology make it an ideal venue for large community events focused on health and the environment. Hosting the SBI Green Marathon here added deeper meaning to the run, as participants could physically experience how thoughtful urban planning supports both wellness and nature.

Set against Ahmedabad’s harmonious blend of heritage and modern urban green spaces, the marathon perfectly reflected the event’s core philosophy: “Run for a Greener India.” The city has consistently promoted cycling tracks, riverfront walks, and public fitness initiatives, making it a natural partner for a marathon that links physical activity with environmental awareness.

Over 6,200+ participants — including seasoned marathoners, students, families, running clubs, and spirited contingents from the Indian Army and Defence Forces — joined together not just to chase personal milestones, but to champion a cleaner, healthier tomorrow. Experts often note that mass participation events like this help normalise fitness as a family and community activity rather than an elite pursuit. The presence of defence personnel also added a strong sense of discipline, motivation, and national pride.

The marathon was proudly flagged off by esteemed dignitaries from the State Bank of India, Shri Balaji Kumar Singhsamanta, Chief General Manager; Shri Chandra Sekhar V, General Manager Network I; Shri Atul Rathi, General Manager Network II; Shri Anil Kumar Ahirwal, General Manager Network III; and Shri Vikram Jha, DGM and CDO, SBI. Their presence highlighted SBI’s long-standing role not only as a financial institution but also as a promoter of social responsibility, public health, and environmental sustainability across India.

Staying true to its green-first promise, the SBI Green Marathon ensured an eco-conscious race experience from start to finish. Organic T-shirts reduced the use of synthetic fabrics, while plantable BIBs encouraged participants to grow plants after the race, turning memories into living symbols of sustainability. Reusable cloth goodie bags helped minimise single-use plastic, reinforcing practical habits that runners could continue in daily life.

The use of black alkaline water stood out as a unique hydration initiative. Alkaline water is increasingly recognised for supporting hydration and recovery after endurance activities, especially during long-distance runs. Such thoughtful choices reflected the organisers’ focus on runner well-being alongside environmental care.

Waste management was handled by partner Skrap, which facilitated waste segregation, recycling, and responsible disposal throughout the event. Sustainability experts often stress that large public events can leave a heavy footprint if waste is not managed properly. By planning segregation at source and committing to a detailed sustainability report, the marathon set a strong example for future sporting events.

The on-ground atmosphere was electrifying, led by the energetic duo RJ Krutarth and RJ Urvi. Their lively commentary, crowd engagement, and constant encouragement played a key role in keeping morale high, especially for first-time runners and families. Such engagement helps create an inclusive environment where participation feels joyful rather than intimidating.

Across the 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon categories, the AIMS-certified routes along the Sabarmati Riverfront offered runners refreshing views, safe pathways, and the city’s signature morning breeze. Certified routes ensure accurate distances and international standards, which is especially important for serious runners tracking performance and personal goals.

With every stride, Ahmedabad reaffirmed its commitment to environmental consciousness, holistic well-being, and community-driven action. From the inspiring flag-off to the eco-friendly post-run celebrations, the city marked another proud milestone in the marathon’s 17-city journey.

As the SBI Green Marathon Season 6 moves ahead to its next destination, Ahmedabad stands tall — reminding the nation that every step, every run, and every heartbeat can move India closer to a greener tomorrow.
