Suryakiran Air Show to Bring Nine Indian Air Force Jets to Bhavnagar’s Skies

The people of Bhavnagar will get an opportunity to watch the Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team perform over Bor Talav, also known as Gaurishankar Lake, on 1 November 2026. The display will bring nine red-and-white Hawk Mk-132 jets together for a series of aerial manoeuvres that require close coordination, careful planning and high levels of flying skill.

The air show is expected to begin at 10 am and last around 30 to 40 minutes. Entry will be free for all citizens, giving families, students and aviation enthusiasts an opportunity to watch the display without buying tickets.

The aircraft will perform precision formation flying, loops, rolls and wingtip-to-wingtip manoeuvres. Coloured smoke trails in saffron, white and green will add to the display, reflecting the colours of the Indian national flag.

The event will take place above Bor Talav, one of Bhavnagar’s well-known public landmarks. Spectators will be able to watch from the lake’s shores, while people with clear views from high-rise buildings and terraces across the city may also see the aircraft.

The display is expected to draw attention from residents who rarely get the chance to see military aircraft performing close formation aerobatics in their own city.

The Suryakiran team is the Indian Air Force’s dedicated formation aerobatic team. It was formed in 1996 at Air Force Station Bidar in Karnataka. In May 2026, the team marked 30 years of service, making the Bhavnagar event part of a year that has seen it celebrate three decades of public displays.

During this period, Suryakiran has performed more than 800 air shows in India and abroad. Its displays have taken it to several countries, including China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

The team is among the few aerobatic groups in the world that fly with nine aircraft in a single formation. This makes its displays different from many smaller teams, where fewer jets perform together.

The Hawk Mk-132 aircraft used by Suryakiran are advanced jet trainers. They are built in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which manufactures aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

The Hawk is used to train pilots for more demanding flying tasks. Its role in Suryakiran’s displays also shows how a training aircraft can perform complex aerobatic routines when flown by experienced pilots.

The red-and-white aircraft are known for their close formation flying. During some manoeuvres, the jets fly only a few metres apart. Such flying demands steady control, strong concentration and trust between pilots.

The team’s displays also depend on a large support group on the ground. Engineers and other technical staff check the aircraft, prepare them for flight and ensure that they are ready for the planned routine.

Suryakiran’s work is not limited to public entertainment. The team represents the Indian Air Force at events and gives young people a chance to see military aviation at close range. Its displays also help explain the training and discipline needed to become a military pilot.

The team’s motto, “Sadaiva Sarvottam”, means “Always the Best”. Its history has also included difficult periods. The team was disbanded in 2011 because of a shortage of training aircraft and returned in 2015 with the Hawk Mk-132 fleet.

The upcoming Bhavnagar show follows several recent displays across India. In September 2026, Suryakiran performed in Meerut, where more than one lakh people gathered over two days to watch the team. Nine Hawk jets performed loops, rolls, inverted flying and other manoeuvres.

The team has also appeared at major events in Gujarat. Its displays have been held in cities such as Vadodara, Jamnagar, Bhuj, Mehsana and Rajkot. In May 2026, it performed over Somnath during the Somnath Amrut Parv celebrations.

Bhavnagar’s show will add another public display to the team’s growing record in Gujarat. It will also bring the aircraft to a city where Bor Talav offers a wide-open view of the sky.

The lake, officially known as Gaurishankar Lake, was originally planned as a reservoir to supply water to the town. Today, it is also a popular place for walks and family visits.

The Indian Air Force has scheduled practice and rehearsal sorties one or two days before the main event. These flights will help the team prepare for the display and allow it to check the conditions over the venue.

Residents who plan to watch the show should keep in mind that the aircraft will operate over a wide area. A clear view of the sky may be enough to see much of the performance, even from locations away from the lake.

For Bhavnagar, the air show will offer a rare chance to see a nine-jet aerobatic team perform above a familiar landmark. For Suryakiran, it will be another public display of the flying skills and teamwork that have defined the team over its 30-year history.
