History, significance, and celebrations of Kargil Vijay Diwas in 2023

Every year on July 26, the country celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas. The triumph of the Indian armed forces over Pakistan in the Kargil War is remembered on this day. The purpose of the day is to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the 1999 conflict. Operation Vijay is another name for the conflict-related operation.

Kargil Vijay Diwas will commemorate its 24th birthday this year.

History of Kargil Vijay Diwas in 2023

After Pakistani troops crossed into Indian territory in the Kargil district of what was once Jammu and Kashmir (now in Ladakh UT), there was an armed war between the two countries. May through July 1999 saw the continuation of the Kargil War.

On May 3, 1999, local shepherds reported the initial infiltration, prompting the Indian Army to initiate “Operation Vijay.” Operation Vijay aimed to retake the Pakistani infiltrators’ abandoned Indian territory along the Line of Control. In support of the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force carried out the attack on May 26 as part of operation Safed Sagar.
After retaking all of the military outposts in Kargil that had been taken over by Pakistani infiltrators, the Indian Army pronounced Operation Vijay a success on July 26, 1999.

2023’s Kargil Vijay Diwas: Importance

The Kargil Vijay Diwas is a time to celebrate and remember the gallantry and bravery of the Indian military forces.

Numerous celebrations are held nationwide on this day to honour the warriors who gave their lives defending the nation. To show gratitude and respect to the Kargil War soldiers, several ceremonies, parades, and activities are held around the nation.

The Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh, is where the major event is held, though. On July 25 and 26, the Indian Army will once again host a two-day celebration at the Kargil War Memorial. On Wednesday, the event’s chief guest will be Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence.

The celebrations also include parades, cultural events, and Army band concerts.  To commemorate the silver anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas next year, the Central government has also organised a year-long activity this year.
