The inauguration of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Jetty Vadinar on 1st March 2024 marked a significant milestone in bolstering infrastructure in the vital Indian Coast Guard Region (North-West). The esteemed Raksha Rajya Mantri, Shri Ajay Bhatt, graced the occasion, emphasizing the critical role played by the ICG in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.

Strategic Importance of Vadinar Jetty

Situated in the strategically vital Indian Coast Guard Region (North-West), the Vadinar Jetty stands as a testament to India’s commitment to enhancing maritime security and safety. Constructed at Rs. 74 crores by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), the jetty’s inauguration underscores the nation’s dedication to fortifying its coastal defense infrastructure.

The Role of the Indian Coast Guard

Headquartered in New Delhi, the Indian Coast Guard operates under the guidance of the Director General. With five regional headquarters located in Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Port Blair, the ICG fulfills a myriad of responsibilities, including maritime security, surveillance within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and assisting mariners and fishermen in distress.

Establishment of ICG Regional Headquarters (North West)

The inception of the ICG Regional Headquarters (North West) on 16th December 2009 in Gandhinagar marked a pivotal moment in maritime security operations. Covering the maritime zones of Gujarat, Daman & Diu, the headquarters ensures effective vigilance and response capabilities along the region’s 1215 km coastline, which shares a notional International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) with Pakistan.

Operational Dynamics and Vigilance Efforts

With an average deployment of 10 to 12 ships and 2 to 3 aircraft daily, the ICG Regional Headquarters (North West) maintains a constant vigil to uphold maritime security and safety. This operational readiness is crucial in safeguarding the nation’s coastal borders and responding promptly to maritime threats or emergencies.

Focus on Infrastructure Development

In line with the government’s commitment to equipping the Indian Coast Guard with advanced operational capabilities, emphasis is placed on developing berthing facilities across key coastal areas. Apart from the Vadinar Jetty, the ICG is constructing additional jetties at Porbandar, Okha, and Mundra, enhancing its operational efficiency and response capabilities.

The inauguration ceremony of the Vadinar Jetty witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries from both Central and State Governments. Director General Rakesh Pal, AVSM, PTM, TM, and Inspector General AK Harbola, TM, graced the occasion, reaffirming the government’s unwavering support towards bolstering maritime security and safety measures.
