Gujarat’s Role in the Solar Revolution: PM Modi Speaks at RE-INVEST 2024

Gujarat has made a substantial contribution to the renewable energy sector, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi enthusiastically acknowledged during the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investor’s Meet and Expo (RE-INVEST 2024), held in Gandhinagar. Gujarat is leading what Modi called the “Solar Revolution,” building on the success of the White Revolution, which increased milk output, and the Sweet Revolution, which increased honey production. Gujarat is a pioneer in the renewable energy sector thanks to its initiatives that began long before many other nations had given solar power a second thought.

Gujarat’s Early Leadership in Solar Energy

PM Modi said during the function that Gujarat had led the way in the use of solar energy. The state laid the groundwork for later national policies by becoming the first in India to create its solar policy. Gujarat has always prioritized sustainability, even in the early days of the global recognition of the potential of renewable energy sources. It’s no accident that Gujarat is currently playing host to a major global gathering such as RE-INVEST 2024, which honors global advancements in renewable energy.

Honoring India’s Renewable Energy Milestones

With more than 200 GW of installed non-fossil fuel capacity, India has made significant strides in renewable energy, as demonstrated by the three-day summit. PM Modi spent time seeing displays highlighting the most recent innovations from numerous start-ups, industry heavyweights, and public and private sector organizations. These developments demonstrate India’s increasing expertise in renewable energy.

Prominent people showed up for the ceremony, including Gujarat’s chief minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Prahlad Joshi, and chief ministers from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The governor of Gujarat, Shri Acharya Devvrat, was also there.

India’s Commitment to a Green Future

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi stressed that concepts like “Green Future” and “Net Zero” are important objectives for India’s development, not just hip phrases. He discussed how the nation has started laying the foundation for a sustainable future by attempting to meet all of its energy demands through nuclear, solar, wind, and hydropower. India needs to move towards renewable energy sources because its oil and gas reserves are finite. Modi’s message was very clear: the nation’s energy policy should take the next millennium into account.

India has also advanced significantly in fulfilling its global climate obligations. Nine years ahead of schedule, Modi proudly declared that India is the first G20 country to meet the climate goals set in the Paris Agreement.

Ambitious Renewable Energy Targets for 2030

India has set a lofty goal to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. The nation has turned its shift to green energy into a popular movement, according to the prime minister. The PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, an initiative to provide solar energy directly to Indian households, is one such example. The government assists homeowners in installing rooftop solar panels as part of this program, thus converting houses into miniature power plants. More than 1.3 crore families have enrolled in the program thus far, and more than 3.25 lakh homes have had installations finished.

Modhera: India’s First Solar Village

Additionally, PM Modi highlighted Modhera, the first solar-powered town in India and home to the venerable Sun Temple. In Modhera, all public and residential areas are powered only by solar energy. The Prime Minister stated that initiatives are in motion to establish similar models in several other towns throughout the nation, converting them into solar hubs.

Advancing Green Hydrogen and Circular Economy

Apart from solar energy, India is aiming to lead the world in green hydrogen as well. The goal of the Rs. 20,000 crore Green Hydrogen Mission, announced by Prime Minister Modi, is to establish India as a leader in the generation of green hydrogen. Additionally, the government is assisting creative newcomers that concentrate on recycling and reusing essential minerals. This strategy is necessary to guarantee that the nation has the resources required to meet its ambitious targets for green energy.

Gujarat’s Role in India’s Green Future

Shri Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, expressed his delight in the state’s leadership in renewable energy. He emphasized that Gujarat’s installed energy capacity currently derives 54% of its electricity from renewable sources. A major area of concentration in India’s renewable energy policy, rooftop solar systems, is another area in which the state leads the way.

Gujarat is also actively developing offshore wind energy, which has a lot of potential due to the state’s 1,600 kilometres of coastline. The Chief Minister underlined that Gujarat is a top choice for investments in the energy sector because of its top-notch infrastructure, logistical capabilities, and business-friendly laws.

A Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

Gujarat’s resolve to generate 100 GW of renewable energy by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2070 was further reaffirmed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. He gave the Prime Minister and the federal government credit for encouraging Gujarat’s efforts in renewable energy, particularly the state’s bid to host RE-INVEST in 2024.

A wide range of people attended the summit, including foreign delegates, industry experts, top officials from the federal and state governments, members of the Council of Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

The occasion provided a forum for the exchange of concepts and tactics to quicken India’s shift to green energy, encouraging partnerships that will influence the nation’s future in renewable energy.
