The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, administered the Oath of Office of Vice President of India to Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan at a Swearing-in-Ceremony held at Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan is now the 15th Vice President of India. He takes on this role after a long political journey. As Vice President, he also becomes the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. This means he will lead the discussions and help run the business in the Rajya Sabha.
He won the vice presidential election on September 9, 2025, defeating the opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes. The election had a very high turnout. Nearly all Members of Parliament voted. Out of 781 eligible voters, 767 cast ballots. Before becoming Vice President, Shri Radhakrishnan served as Governor of Maharashtra for just over a year. Earlier, he was the Governor of Jharkhand. In addition, he held temporary charge as Governor of Telangana and Lt Governor of Puducherry.
He has over forty years of experience in public life, especially in his home state of Tamil Nadu. In the earlier part of his political life, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore in 1998 and again in 1999. He was the State President of the BJP in Tamil Nadu. He led a public yatra (journey) across many areas and raised issues like river linking, removing social evils, and strengthening the community, while being in opposition in his own state
Smt Droupadi Murmu, who administered the oath, is the 15th President of India. She took office on 25 July 2022. Before that, she held the position of Governor of Jharkhand, and has been known for her work among tribal communities and in public service. The Swearing-in Ceremony was held at Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official residence of the President. Ganatantra Mandap is one of its halls used for ceremonies. The change comes after the resignation of the previous Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar. He stepped down earlier.
Shri Radhakrishnan has spoken about cooperative federalism, saying that good relations between the central government and the state governments are important for democracy to work well. With this new office, Shri Radhakrishnan will preside over Rajya Sabha sessions, help maintain order in debates, safeguard the rules of Parliament, and act as a tie between the legislature and state. Also, in the absence of the President or if the President is unable to act, the Vice President steps in. This makes the role constitutional and important. Ri Radhakrishnan, but for India.
