Bavishi Eye Hospital Marks 60 Years Of Care And Trust

Newzdaddy Healthcare Updates

Bavishi Eye Hospital, a trusted name in eye care since 1965, proudly celebrates 60 years of dedicated service to the community. Bavishi Eye Hospital has been serving people for many years. Over this time, similar long-running eye centres have often led public eye camps and taught new eye doctors. This shows how eye hospitals can help whole communities, not just individual patients.

Established by the renowned ophthalmologist Dr Anil K. Bavishi at Relief Road, Ahmedabad, the hospital began with just ₹2,000 and minimal facilities. Over the decades, with his pioneering vision and relentless commitment, Bavishi Eye Hospital has grown into a premier institution serving millions of patients from India and abroad.

Many doctors who start small grow with steady care and training. When a hospital begins with little money but strong care, it often becomes trusted by families for generations. This trust helps hospitals get patients from nearby states and sometimes from other countries.

Dr Anil Bavishi was among the first in India to:
• Introduce Refractive Surgery (Radial Keratectomy) after training in Russia.
• Start Microscope-assisted eye surgery.
• Train more than 100 ophthalmologists nationwide as a professor of ophthalmology.
• He introduced LASIK surgery in Gujarat in 1998.
• Was an Acclaimed strabismologist (Squint Specialist).

Doctors who train abroad often bring new tests and tools home. When a hospital teaches 100+ doctors, those doctors take that skill to many towns. New surgery types like LASIK and microscope-assisted work let patients get better vision faster and with smaller cuts.

In 1991, Bavishi Eye Hospital expanded with its second branch at Nehru Nagar.

Opening a second branch is a sign that services are needed in more places. Many multi-centre hospitals set one branch for complex surgery and another for regular checkups. This helps more people get care close to home.

Continuing the legacy, Dr Darshin Bavishi completed his MS (Master of Surgery in Ophthalmology) in 1993. In 1994, he pursued further academic training in the United Kingdom, where he earned the prestigious FRCS degree. Driven by a deep commitment to serve his country, he chose to return to India in 1999, leaving behind a lucrative consultant position abroad.

When doctors return from outside jobs, they often start new services or teach others. This helps the local hospital offer modern surgery and training. Choosing to come back shows a focus on helping the local people.

With a strong passion for academics, Dr Darshin Bavishi travelled extensively across the country, delivering lectures and performing live surgical demonstrations for fellow ophthalmologists. His expertise in phacoemulsification and refractive surgery helped expand services at Bavishi Eye Hospital and elevated the standards of eye care to the most premium level.

Live surgery demos and talks spread new skills quickly. When a team shares techniques like phacoemulsification, many other surgeons learn to do faster, safer cataract surgery. That raises concerns for many patients in the region. Continuing the legacy, Dr Alap Bavishi joined Bavishi Eye Hospital in 2021. He completed his training in Comprehensive Ophthalmology at the prestigious Aravind Eye Hospital, Tamil Nadu, followed by a Fellowship in Medical Retina from Pune. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father, and uncle, he brought new energy and vision to the institution. Newer generation doctors often bring modern tests, retina care and computer tools. Training at places like Aravind often means strong experience with many patients, so they can handle a wide range of eye problems.

Under his leadership, Bavishi Eye Hospital expanded further with the launch of its third centre at Isanpur in 2023, strengthening its reach and commitment to delivering advanced eye care. A new centre helps reduce travel for patients. When hospitals open local branches, more people come for early checks and avoid vision loss. This step often means better screening for children and older people.

Over six decades, Bavishi Eye Hospital has:

• Treated more than 20 lakh patients.
• Successfully performed over 4 lakh eye surgeries.
• Run a charitable trust hospital at Gheekanta for over 20 years, offering free cataract, glaucoma, and squint surgeries for the underprivileged.

Treating large numbers means the team has wide experience with many eye problems. Free charity services give sight to people who cannot pay. This work also helps train young doctors and build trust in the city. Marking its 60-year milestone, Bavishi Eye Hospital proudly announces its collaboration with ASG Eye Hospitals – India’s largest eye care chain – and the launch of its 4th centre at SG Highway, opposite Kargil petrol pump, Ahmedabad.

Collaborations with big chains can bring high-tech equipment and wider networks for patients. When a local hospital joins a national chain, it can keep local care while adding things like advanced testing or a better supply of lenses.

The new Centre of Excellence will offer:
• Advanced cataract surgeries with premium intraocular lenses.
• AI-guided LASIK technology for superior spectacle-free outcomes.
• Comprehensive retina services and a dedicated Myopia Control Clinic.
• Introduction of myopia control glasses for children.

Premium lenses and AI tools are being used more in big centres today. Myopia control for children reduces the chance of very poor vision later. Having retina services locally helps people with diabetes and other eye diseases get quick care. With a vision of “Spectacle-free life at 20, 40, and 60”, Bavishi Eye Hospital continues its mission of delivering world-class eye care with trust, compassion, and innovation. A clear vision message helps people remember what the hospital wants: less dependence on glasses and good eye health at every age. When hospitals keep this focus, they run programs for children, adults, and older people to protect sight for life.
