Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, today held an intensive strategy dialogue with Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat on advancing the national mission for a ‘TB-Mukt Bharat’. The interaction, organised under the “Parliamentarians Championing a TB Mukt Bharat” initiative, took place at Garvi Gujarat Bhawan on the sidelines of the Winter Session of Parliament.

The meeting came at a time when India continues to lead the world in the global fight against tuberculosis. The country has been working hard to reach the Sustainable Development Goal target of ending TB by 2030, but India has set a more ambitious goal of eliminating TB by 2025. Gujarat has been seen as one of the stronger performers in TB care, showing steady progress through early detection, rapid testing and free treatment under the National TB Elimination Programme.

During the discussion, Shri Nadda stressed that strong involvement by MPs can accelerate the fight on the ground. MPs play a key role because they can work closely with district teams, health workers and local leaders. They can help drive awareness campaigns, monitor health services, and ensure that people with TB are supported early. In many districts of Gujarat, village health volunteers have been carrying out door-to-door visits, helping people understand symptoms and encouraging them to get tested quickly.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of nutrition support for patients, as under-nutrition is a major reason why TB spreads and becomes harder to treat. Through India’s Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana, lakhs of patients receive monthly nutrition support, which helps them recover faster. Many MPs from Gujarat have been active Ni-kshay Mitras, supporting patients with food kits, counselling and community visits.

Gujarat has done well in rolling out rapid diagnostic machines, such as CB-NAAT and TrueNat, which can detect TB within hours. This has reduced the delay in treatment. The state also uses digital tools like the Ni-kshay portal to track patients, follow up with families and ensure treatment completion. With this new meeting, MPs agreed to strengthen these efforts further in their own constituencies.

Officials shared that early detection is the biggest defence. India has increased its foot soldiers through ASHA workers, who visit families and educate them about cough symptoms lasting more than two weeks. These workers also help in collecting sputum samples and making sure that treatment continues for the full six months. The Minister asked MPs to support these teams with more local activities, including school awareness sessions, panchayat meetings and youth campaigns.

The Ni-kshay Mitra Network, which allows community members, organisations and leaders to “adopt” TB patients, will be expanded in Gujarat. Many MPs shared that citizens feel more motivated to participate when they see local leaders involved. The support often includes nutrition kits, warm clothing, counselling and transport help for clinic visits. The Health Ministry noted that when communities offer such support, treatment success improves and stigma is reduced.

The Minister also spoke about the need to fight stigma. Many people hide their illness due to fear or shame. MPs were encouraged to talk openly about TB as a curable disease. Gujarat has run many awareness rallies and street plays to build confidence. These local activities make a big difference because they reach people where they live.

Gujarat’s MPs reaffirmed their commitment to pushing TB elimination with clear targets. They agreed to increase regular reviews with district health officers and monitor progress more closely. The dialogue ended with a shared pledge to speed up the mission and add more community partners to the Ni-kshay Mitra movement. With stronger coordination between Parliament, health teams and citizens, Gujarat aims to support India’s national goal of a TB-free future.
