India Helicopter Manufacturing Ecosystem Set to Transform Defence

Adani Defence & Aerospace and Leonardo Forge Strategic Partnership to Build India’s Helicopter Ecosystem

Adani Defence & Aerospace and Leonardo announce a strategic partnership to develop, manufacture, and sustain a helicopter manufacturing ecosystem in India.

This announcement comes at a time when India is actively reshaping its defence manufacturing landscape. Over the past decade, the country has moved from being one of the world’s largest importers of defence equipment to a nation focused on building systems at home. Helicopter manufacturing is a key part of this shift because helicopters are used across defence, disaster relief, border patrol, and internal security. Until now, most advanced helicopters were imported or assembled with limited local input. A full ecosystem means not just assembling helicopters, but also making parts, training people, and maintaining aircraft inside the country. Such ecosystems have helped nations like Italy, the UK, and South Korea reduce costs and respond faster to military needs.

The programme will address the increasing demand and new military requirements, positioning India as a future hub for helicopter manufacturing.

India’s armed forces are facing a serious shortage of light and medium helicopters. Many older helicopters, especially those used for transport, medical evacuation, and surveillance, are nearing the end of their service life. Modern warfare also demands helicopters that can operate at high altitudes, in hot climates, and in difficult terrain. Countries that became manufacturing hubs, such as France and the United States, did so by first meeting domestic demand before serving global markets. If India can meet its own large demand, it creates steady production lines, skilled workers, and long-term confidence for future exports.

The partnership paves the path for a new Indian helicopter ecosystem with the potential to be extended to the civil domestic demand, with dedicated localised industrial activities, and support the international supply chain.

Civil helicopter demand in India is also growing. Helicopters are increasingly used for offshore energy work, emergency medical services, tourism, and connecting remote areas. Local production can reduce costs, improve the availability of spare parts, and cut long waiting times for repairs. Countries with strong local supply chains are also better placed to support global manufacturers during disruptions, such as those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. By joining international supply chains, Indian firms can supply parts and services to global markets, even beyond helicopters built in India.

Adani Defence & Aerospace, the flagship defence and aerospace arm of Adani Enterprises Ltd and a frontrunner in India’s defence sector, today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Leonardo, the global leader in defence, aerospace, and security. This landmark partnership will establish a fully integrated helicopter manufacturing ecosystem in India, addressing surging military demands and propelling the nation toward self-reliance in helicopter production.

Memorandums of Understanding in defence often mark the first formal step before large industrial investments. Similar MoUs in the past, such as those in fighter aircraft and naval systems, have later turned into major production programmes. Leonardo is known worldwide for its long experience in rotorcraft design, safety systems, and mission equipment. For Adani Defence, this builds on its recent expansion into ammunition, drones, avionics, and complex aerospace systems. Together, the two companies bring both global technology and local industrial strength.

Targeting the Indian Armed Forces’ requirements, particularly for Leonardo’s advanced AW169M and AW109 TrekkerM helicopters, the collaboration will deliver phased indigenisation, robust maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, and comprehensive pilot training.

The AW169M and AW109 TrekkerM are already used by several armed forces and security agencies worldwide. These helicopters are valued for their flexibility, safety features, and ability to operate in challenging environments. Phased indigenisation means that over time, more parts and systems will be made in India, reducing dependence on imports. Strong MRO facilities are critical because helicopters require frequent checks and skilled maintenance. Countries with local MRO capabilities save money and keep aircraft operational for longer periods. Pilot training within the country also improves readiness and reduces reliance on foreign facilities.

By fusing Leonardo’s world-class helicopter design and engineering prowess with Adani Defence’s end-to-end defence and aerospace expertise, the initiative advances the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, strengthens national defence readiness, and has the potential to be extended to civil aviation applications and international supply chain integration.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat is not only about building equipment locally but also about developing skills, standards, and long-term industrial confidence. When defence platforms are designed and supported locally, upgrades and modifications can be done faster. This is especially important during emergencies or conflicts. Civil aviation benefits too, as safety standards, quality control, and trained manpower often overlap between the defence and civilian sectors.

This ecosystem promises transformative economic impact: thousands of high-skill jobs in engineering, manufacturing, logistics, and sustainment services, while cementing India as a competitive hub for helicopter production.

Defence manufacturing creates a wide range of jobs, from design engineers and technicians to supply chain managers and quality inspectors. Each large aerospace job also supports many smaller businesses, including tool makers, electronics suppliers, and training institutes. Countries with strong aerospace hubs often see long-term economic benefits because skills developed in defence also support space, civil aviation, and advanced manufacturing.

Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Defence & Aerospace, stated: “This alliance with Leonardo is a pivotal stride toward a resilient, future-proof helicopter ecosystem in India. Merging global excellence with our industrial momentum, we will drive enduring value, high-skill employment, and alignment with Aatmanirbhar Bharat to position India as a global aerospace powerhouse.”

Industry leaders often highlight resilience because defence supply chains must function even during global disruptions. Building locally reduces risks linked to foreign supply delays or political uncertainty.

Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO, Adani Defence & Aerospace, added: “With the Indian Armed Forces projecting demand for over 1000 helicopters in the coming decade, this partnership realises our vision for sovereign manufacturing. It will accelerate indigenisation, strengthen supply chains, and establish India as a world-class production base.”

Such a great projected demand gives manufacturers confidence to invest in factories, training, and long-term research. Stable demand has been a key factor behind successful defence industries in other countries.

Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director, Leonardo Helicopters, affirmed: “We’re extremely pleased to join forces with Adani to provide our contribution to India’s vision for an even stronger and growing role of their rotorcraft industry, and to enable the country to access the level of modern technology and operational capability it deserves. We look forward to making progress in this endeavour, leveraging our complementary expertise to deliver the best solutions.”

Global manufacturers increasingly seek strong local partners to meet regional needs. Such partnerships often lead to technology sharing, local innovation, and deeper industrial ties.

This strategic partnership redefines India’s aerospace landscape, strengthening defence autonomy and positioning the country as a trusted global hub for helicopter manufacturing and sustainment.
