RRU Sports Officer Kalpesh Sharma Joins Gujarat Armwrestling Association
Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) has taken on a new role in Gujarat’s armwrestling administration after Kalpesh Sharma, a Sports Training Officer with the university’s School of Physical Education and Sports (SPES), was appointed as a member of the Armwrestling Sports Association, Gujarat.
The appointment gives Sharma a role in planning and running armwrestling competitions at the state and national level. He will also take part in the association’s organisational work, including event operations, assigned administrative duties and discussions on policies and plans.
For RRU, the appointment adds another link between its sports training work and sporting bodies outside the university. Sharma is listed by RRU as a Sports Training Development Officer in Strength and Conditioning at SPES, where his work is connected with physical training and sports preparation.
His new responsibility comes at a time when Gujarat has been hosting larger armwrestling competitions. In May and June 2026, RRU’s Gandhinagar campus hosted the 4th PAFI National Armwrestling and Para Armwrestling Championship. The event brought more than 1,800 athletes to the university, according to a report on the championship. Competitors took part in several age groups and categories, including sub-junior, junior, youth, senior, masters and para armwrestling.
The championship was organised by the Armwrestling Sports Association Gujarat under the People’s Armwrestling Federation India (PAFI). The competition also included athletes associated with the Pro Panja League and offered leading performers a route towards international competition.
That event is relevant to Sharma’s new role because it shows the level of competition already being hosted in Gujarat. A national championship involving more than 1,800 athletes requires work well beyond the matches themselves. Venue planning, athlete registration, competition schedules, officials, equipment, accommodation and coordination all form part of the task of running a large sporting event.
Sharma’s responsibilities with the Armwrestling Sports Association, Gujarat are expected to include similar organisational work when the association conducts championships and other programmes. The appointment also gives him voting rights in the association’s institutional decisions, according to the announcement.
His role will include providing professional advice to the association and taking part in discussions on organisational policies and longer-term plans for the sport. The brief announcing the appointment also states that he will help formulate and manage policies linked to the association’s future work.
RRU’s School of Physical Education and Sports already has staff working across several sports. University records list Kalpesh Sharma in Strength and Conditioning alongside sports training officers working in disciplines such as kabaddi, volleyball, athletics, kho-kho, football, wushu and handball.
The university’s sports training programme also covers physical preparation and coaching support. Its 2026-27 training calendar lists a workshop on strength and conditioning coordinated by Kalpesh Sharma for trainers, coaches and physical trainers.
The wider growth of armwrestling in Gujarat has also brought the sport to a larger competitive audience. The 2026 national championship at RRU featured athletes from several states and included both able-bodied and para categories. The top two athletes in the various categories were reported as qualifying for the World Armwrestling and Para Armwrestling Championship scheduled to be held in New Delhi later in 2026.
For a sport that depends heavily on strength, technique and weight classification, the quality of competition management matters. National events bring together athletes from different states, while state associations provide much of the organisational structure through which competitors enter tournaments and progress to higher levels.
The appointment therefore places an RRU sports official within a state-level sporting organisation at a time when Gujarat is already hosting major armwrestling competitions. It also reflects the wider role that university sports staff can play outside regular campus training and student activities.
For Sharma, the immediate responsibility will be to contribute to the Armwrestling Sports Association, Gujarat’s work in competitions and administration. For RRU, his appointment gives the university’s sports faculty a formal presence in administering a growing competitive sport in the state.
The next test will come through the association’s future championships and programmes, where planning, competition management and sports administration will determine how effectively the organisation can support athletes and conduct events.
