Air Vice Marshal GS Bhullar VM(G) on The Future of Agniveers

The SWAC Commander Explains How The New Uncapped Extension Secures IAF Morale.

The integration of Agniveers into the Indian Air Force’s South Western Air Command (SWAC) represents a profound shift towards a highly competitive, merit-based military structure. In a recent press conference, Air Vice Marshal GS Bhullar VM(G) offered key insights into how these short-term recruits are shaping the future of the IAF, and how recent policy refinements are altering the trajectory of the Agnipath scheme.

While the exact deployment numbers remain classified for operational security, the footprint of these recruits is expansive. When asked about the sheer volume of Agniveers and the 25% permanent absorption rule, Air Vice Marshal GS Bhullar clarified that they are heavily involved across the spectrum of IAF duties.

“They aren’t just doing basic administrative or guard duty,” he noted. “They are heavily involved in core operations, working with air defence systems, manning radars, and supporting fighter jet and helicopter operations.”

He emphasised that the 25% rule applies evenly across the entire Indian Air Force, with numbers balanced according to the operational density of each command. For the IAF, this structure fosters essential workplace momentum.

With a short-term contract, natural questions arise regarding the operational commitment of the recruits. When asked if those knowing they might leave in a few years still bring the same energy to the flight line, the Air Vice Marshal was unequivocal in his confidence.

“Their commitment is indistinguishable from a regular airman,” Air Vice Marshal Bhullar explained, noting that the shared military values forged during joint training build the warrior. Having personally visited bases across Maharashtra and Gujarat, including Kutch, Jamnagar, Vadodara, and Vadsar, he confirmed that base commanders report identical levels of energy, dedication, and operational output from the Agniveers.

When asked if the IAF evaluates these recruits differently due to their distinct track, he dismissed the notion entirely. They are assessed using the exact same feedback systems as the regular staff.

“We do not treat them differently. I always say Agniveer is just a starting rank,” he remarked. “They wear the blue uniform, they are on our blue team, and they are fully capable of going to war.”

He described the environment as highly competitive and merit-driven, much like the Short Service Commission for officers. In a station with 100 Agniveers, those competing for the permanent spots are constantly proving their skills, fitness, and spirit, creating an incredibly healthy and driven environment.

The most significant revelation centred on the 75% of recruits who do not make the initial 25% cut. When asked if the government’s recently announced optional two-year extension was driven by ground-level feedback, Air Vice Marshal Bhullar confirmed that it was a direct result of continuous trials and reviews at the station level.

“The two-year extension is a massive win for both sides,” he stated. “We have these highly driven young people trained on very expensive, complex technology. Retaining them makes absolute sense for us.”

Crucially, this new extension shifts the paradigm for the recruits. When asked what this means for the average Agniveer’s career stability, he explained that it provides a vital new lifeline. During this two-year extension, the rigid 25% quota limit is completely removed.

If an Agniveer maintains good health, discipline, and strong work performance over the total six-year period, they secure a permanent job as a regular soldier based purely on meeting operational standards, rather than battling a mathematical cap. For the IAF, this updated framework perfectly balances the need for trained, tech-savvy operators with the recruits’ desire for long-term professional security.

What I personally feel is that by bridging the gap between national security demands and the career aspirations of our youth, this evolution of the Agnipath scheme marks a highly positive step forward.
