New Delhi: India’s 2012 U-19 captain, Unmukt Chand made his Big Bash League (BBL) debut on Tuesday. The young batter, playing for Melbourne Renegades in the tournament, was named in the Playing XI for the match against Hobart Hurricanes.

The 54th match of the BBL between Melbourne and Hobart was a bit special for Indian cricket fans as for the first time in the history of the tournament, an Indian player made his debut in one of the best T20 leagues in the world.

Fans had high hopes for Unmukt but he failed to make an impact. The 28-year-old flopped in his debut match as he could score just 6 runs off 8 balls at a time when his team needed him to stick around and clinch much-needed victory for them.

Unmukt got caught out as he lost his wicket off spinner Sandeep Lamichhane’s delivery by playing a poorly-timed shot. At one point in the game, Melbourne were 138/1 after 14.4 overs, but despite this they lost the match.

Melbourne Renegades lost against Hobart Hurricanes by just 6 runs. Batting first, team Hobart scored 182/5 in 20 overs. In reply, team Melbourne managed to score 176 runs in 20 overs.

For Melbourne, skipper Aaron Finch (75) and Shaun Marsh (51) scored the maximum runs. After Shaun Marsh’s dismissal, Unmukt Chand was the next man in and everyone expected him to help his team get an easy win but he ended up giving away his wicket to Lamichhane.

After this, Melbourne lost 3 wickets in quick succession. Finch was dismissed by Thomas Rodgers, who also picked Jonathan Merlo’s wicket. Eventually, Renegades failed to chase down the target by 6 runs and lost the match.

For the unversed, Unmukt Chand had announced retirement from Indian cricket at the age of just 28 to seek better opportunities around the globe. After this, he went to America and started playing league cricket and from there he got a call from Melbourne Renegades. Unfortunately, Unmukt flopped in his debut.
