Adani Arogya Gets Foundation Stone in New Town, Kolkata
Adani Arogya Mandir: 2,000-Bed Hospital Planned for Kolkata as Group Sets Out ₹1 Lakh Crore Bengal Investment Plan
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the proposed 2,000-bed Adani Arogya Mandir at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata. The Adani Foundation will develop the project at a cost of more than ₹4,000 crore, according to the company.
The proposed hospital is planned on 51.75 acres and is expected to treat more than 200,000 inpatients and over two million outpatients each year once fully operational. The project is also expected to create about 10,000 jobs across healthcare and related services.
The announcement came with a much larger investment plan. Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said the group intends to invest more than ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035. The proposed spending covers ports, logistics, renewable energy, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads and bridges, green cement and hyperscale data centres.
Adani Arogya Mandir is planned as a multi-speciality hospital with step-down and transitional care facilities. The campus will also include a Meditel and Vishram Gruh for relatives of patients.
The first phase is expected to concentrate on cancer treatment and other advanced tertiary healthcare services. The wider plan includes a medical college with an annual intake of 150 undergraduate students, more than 100 postgraduate students and more than 40 students in super-speciality courses.
A College of Nursing and an institution for allied healthcare and paramedical education are also planned. Residential facilities for healthcare workers and their families are part of the proposed campus.
Gautam Adani said the hospital would operate as a not-for-profit institution. He said 1,000 of its 2,000 beds would cater to economically weaker sections eligible under state and central health insurance schemes.
The project therefore has a wider role than adding hospital beds. Its proposed medical college and training institutions could add capacity for doctors, nurses, technicians and other healthcare workers in eastern India.
The project also includes a research programme covering genomics, precision medicine, biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, clinical trials and molecular and applied biomedical sciences.
The Adani Foundation has engaged Mayo Clinic Global Consulting in the United States and Singapore’s SingHealth for expertise in areas including clinical care, academic medicine, digital health, quality, workforce development and research-related work.
The plan is expected to develop further in a second phase, with Centres of Excellence in different specialities and super-specialities. The group says the Kolkata facility could help patients from eastern India access specialised treatment closer to home instead of travelling to other major cities for some forms of care.
For West Bengal, the scale of the proposal is significant. Kolkata already serves as a major medical centre for patients from the eastern and north-eastern parts of India and neighbouring countries. A large teaching hospital with cancer treatment, medical education and research could add another major institution to that network.
The hospital is planned inside the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town’s Action Area II. The state government conceived the technology hub as an information technology and IT-enabled services centre. Its foundation stone was laid in August 2018, and the project was planned across about 200 acres.
The location places the proposed medical campus within an area that is also being developed for technology-led businesses. Government land records show that plots in the New Town area have previously been offered for medical colleges, teaching hospitals and other health institutions.
The combination of healthcare, education, research and technology could therefore give the area a wider mix of activities than its original IT-focused plan.
At the foundation ceremony, Adani described West Bengal as the group’s second major base of work after Mundra in Gujarat. He compared the state’s position in eastern India with the role Mundra has played in the group’s operations in western India.
The ₹1 lakh crore investment figure is a proposed roadmap extending to 2035, rather than an amount already invested. The areas named by the group cover several large infrastructure and energy sectors, so the eventual scale and timing of individual projects will depend on project development and execution.
The announcement also places the hospital within a wider expansion plan rather than treating it as a stand-alone healthcare project.
The day’s announcements extended beyond business and healthcare.
The Adani Group signed two memorandums of understanding with the West Bengal government. One concerns restoration of the historic Writers’ Building, while the other covers the Adani Pujo Preview initiative, linked to Kolkata’s Durga Puja activities and the people who work around the festival, including organisers, artists, artisans and service providers. The group also announced support for the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat.
Writers’ Building has a long place in Bengal’s administrative history. Built in 1777 for the East India Company’s clerks, it later served as the state secretariat until government offices moved to Nabanna in 2013. Restoration work has been under way as the building’s future use is reconsidered.
For Kolkata, the proposals announced on Thursday therefore cover three very different areas: healthcare, large infrastructure investment and the preservation of places and traditions linked to the city’s history.
Adani Arogya Mandir is still at the foundation stage. Its eventual effect on healthcare in West Bengal will depend on construction, staffing, medical capacity, access for eligible patients and the delivery of the proposed academic and research facilities. The wider ₹1 lakh crore investment plan will also unfold over several years, making project execution the key measure to watch after Thursday’s announcements.
