Union Minister Amit Shah Lays Foundation Stone for New College and Hostel in Jodhpur

Jodhpur, Rajasthan: Today, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the Shri Parsmal Bohra Blind College building and a hostel for students. The event was attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and many other important guests.

In his speech, Amit Shah said that when someone dedicates their life to helping people with disabilities, they inspire others to help too. He added that God gives every person special abilities, and by recognising these, we can make life easier for people with disabilities. Many people have been inspired by Sushila Ji’s life and work.

Shah mentioned that three projects costing about 15 crore rupees are being started today. He said, based on the organisation’s track record, these projects will be completed on time and bring a better life to hundreds of children.

He praised Sushila Ji for her work, saying she has helped blind students through 5 schools, 2 colleges, free hostels, meals, audiobooks, recorded lectures, Braille printing, computer labs, and libraries. She has spread knowledge and hope among visually impaired students.

Amit Shah said that the Parsmal Bohra Blind College became Rajasthan’s first blind college in 2022. He added that when society sees people with disabilities as capable rather than weak, real progress happens. In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the term “Divyang” instead of “disabled.” This word shows respect and gives people with disabilities a new sense of pride, identity, and independence.

Shah also talked about sports for people with disabilities. He said that India won only 8 medals in the Paralympics from 1960 to 2012. But in the last three Paralympics, India won 52 medals, showing that people with disabilities can achieve great things when given the right support.

He highlighted government support for people with disabilities under PM Modi. The budget for the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities increased from 338 crore in 2014 to 1313 crore rupees today. Many buildings have been made accessible under the Accessible India Campaign, including 1,314 buildings with 563 crore rupees spent, and 1,748 more buildings are being improved. Airports are also being made accessible, including 35 international and 55 domestic airports.

Before PM Modi, the government provided artificial limbs to only 700,000 people, but in the last 10 years, 31 lakh people have received artificial limbs through 18,000 camps organised across India.
