Great Indian Table Brings Regional Cuisine to Ahmedabad

The Great Indian Table: Ahmedabad Hotel Plans Independence Day Dinner Celebrating Regional Cuisine

Ahmedabad will mark Independence Day with a dinner centred on India’s varied food traditions as The Market at Le Méridien Ahmedabad hosts The Great Indian Table on 15 August 2026.

The dinner is scheduled from 7 pm to 11 pm at The Market, the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant. The event will bring together dishes and cooking traditions associated with Awadh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat and South India.

The plan reflects a feature of Indian food that has developed over centuries: there is no single style that can fully represent the country’s cuisine. Food changes with geography, climate, local crops, communities and cultural practices. Government and tourism sources describe Indian cuisine as a collection of regional traditions, with local ingredients and cooking methods playing a major role in shaping what people eat.

For diners in Ahmedabad, the evening will offer a chance to see several of these traditions presented in one setting.

The menu at The Great Indian Table is planned around regional influences rather than a single state or cooking style. Awadhi and Rajasthani traditions will be part of the offering, alongside the strong flavours associated with Punjab. Gujarat’s food culture will also have a place, as will culinary traditions from southern India.

The range is significant because Indian regional food can differ greatly even when dishes use some of the same basic ingredients. The Ministry of Tourism notes that food traditions can change within relatively short distances, reflecting differences in culture, language, local produce and history. The Ministry of Culture has also described traditional Indian food as a product of centuries of regional development, with recipes shaped by local spices, herbs, vegetables and fruits.

The evening will also include live cooking areas. These are planned as an Artisan Tandoor Kitchen, a Regional Chaat Studio and a Signature Indian Bread Counter.

Tandoor cooking has a long place in the Indian culinary tradition, while breads vary widely across the country in ingredients, shape and cooking method. Chaat, too, has developed into a broad group of regional snacks, with combinations of spices, chutneys, vegetables, grains and other ingredients.

The live stations are intended to give diners a closer look at the preparation of Indian food instead of serving the dishes only at the table. For a restaurant setting, this puts the cooking process alongside the finished food and allows guests to watch some of the techniques used by chefs.

The meal will finish with a Dessert Gallery covering several styles of Indian sweets. The planned selection includes traditional sweets, regional festive favourites, newer interpretations and artisan chocolate creations.

Drinks will include handcrafted coolers, regional refreshments and familiar Indian beverages served in a contemporary style.

Food has long been closely linked with Indian festivals and social life. A 2018 statement from the Press Information Bureau noted that food forms part of India’s cultural and social traditions and that the country’s varied landscapes, languages, festivals and communities have influenced its cuisine. The Ministry of Tourism similarly describes Indian food as a collection of traditions that have developed over hundreds of years.

The wider history is complex. Indian cooking has absorbed influences through trade, migration and contact with other cultures. Tourism material from the Government of India points to examples such as Mughlai cooking, which carries Central Asian influences, and the effect of Portuguese contact on some coastal food traditions. At the same time, local communities have continued to shape recipes around ingredients available in their own regions.

This mix can be seen across India. Northern cooking includes a wide range of breads, kebabs and rich gravies, while southern cuisines make extensive use of rice, coconut, curry leaves and seafood in many areas. Western India includes strong vegetarian traditions and distinctive street foods. Gujarat itself has a food culture shaped by its local produce, community traditions and long history of trade.

The Great Indian Table is being held at a hotel that already has a broad food offering. Le Méridien Ahmedabad lists The Market as a multiple-cuisine restaurant, with an open kitchen used during dinner service. The hotel also operates Bayleaf, an Indian restaurant, along with Drift and JAVA+. Its location is at Ramdev Nagar Cross Road, Satellite, Ahmedabad.

The setting for the Independence Day dinner is planned around saffron, ivory and emerald tones, with ambient lighting and instrumental music. These details will provide the backdrop, while the food remains the main focus of the evening.

The date also gives the dinner a clear connection to India’s Independence Day. Celebrated each year on 15 August, the national occasion has become a time for public events, family gatherings and cultural programmes across the country. Food, with its strong links to regional identity and community life, offers another way to reflect India’s diversity.

The Great Indian Table will take place at The Market, Le Méridien Ahmedabad, on Saturday, 15 August 2026, from 7 pm to 11 pm. For Ahmedabad diners, the event brings several regional food traditions into one evening while placing the country’s long and varied cooking history at the centre of the Independence Day celebration.
