Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic Protects India’s Heroes

A Praiseworthy Initiative for the Health and Safety of Truck and Commercial Vehicle Drivers

In a significant move to safeguard the health of truck and commercial vehicle drivers who contribute immensely to the nation’s development, M D Motors has launched a commendable initiative. India’s first “Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic” has been operationalised at the M D Motors Bakrol Centre in Ahmedabad. The primary objective of this clinic is to provide physical check-ups and ensure the well-being of our driver brothers who navigate the highways day and night. Details regarding this project were shared by representatives from the All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA), BLR Logistics Ltd and Shri Kailash Bhati, MD, M D Motors, Jograj Rathore (CEO, M D Motors), and Ishwardan Gadhvi (HR and Admin, M D Motors).

Truck drivers are the backbone of India’s transport system. According to government estimates, more than 9 million truck drivers move goods across the country. Nearly 65 per cent of India’s freight travels by road. This means that most food, medicines, and everyday goods reach cities and villages thanks to truck drivers. Yet, studies by transport groups have shown that many drivers do not get regular health care. Long hours, poor sleep, and stress often harm their health. Because of this, such clinics can play a big role in helping drivers stay fit and safe.

This clinic is being led by the All India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA) and is managed with the support of BLR Logistics Ltd as a CSR project. The clinic space has been provided by M D Motors ATS at Bakrol, Ahmedabad. Expressing his commitment, Shri Kailash Bhati of M D Motors stated that they have always been dedicated to serving the transport community and ensuring the health and safety of driver brothers. Shri Jograj Rathore, CEO of M D Motors, added that the goal of the ‘Highway Hero+ Smart Clinic’ is not just to provide treatment but to make the drivers feel a sense of dignity and security, ensuring every driver stays healthy and returns home safely.

Across India, many companies are now taking part in CSR activities to support drivers. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has often highlighted that driver health is linked to road safety. Experts say that unhealthy drivers are more likely to feel tired, which can lead to accidents. India reports over 4.5 lakh road accidents every year, and driver fatigue is one of the known causes. Health support centres like this clinic can help reduce such risks by checking drivers early and guiding them properly.

A special initiative has been started keeping in mind the health and welfare of truck and commercial vehicle drivers, with the main goal of providing quality and free medical services. Under this service, facilities such as health check-ups, teleconsultation with senior doctors, and immediate assistance will be available to drivers at no cost. Generally, a full health check-up of this type costs around Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 5,000, but here all these services are being provided completely free of charge.

This free service is very important because many drivers earn modest incomes. Reports from driver welfare groups show that a large number of truck drivers avoid medical tests due to cost and lack of time. Teleconsultation can help them speak to doctors without travelling far. This is helpful for drivers who are always on the move and cannot visit hospitals easily.

The clinic is equipped with modern equipment for the physical examination of drivers. This includes basic tests such as ECG, haemoglobin, blood sugar, blood pressure, body temperature, BMI, and SPO2. In addition, keeping professional needs in mind, important tests like audiometry, pulmonary function, eye screening, and colour blindness tests will be conducted. With the driver’s consent, HIV and AIDS testing facilities will also be provided so they can remain fully informed about their health status.

These tests are very useful for drivers because their job depends on alertness and physical fitness. Poor eyesight or hearing can increase accident risk. Lung problems are also common among drivers due to dust and pollution on highways. Health experts say early detection can prevent serious illness. Regular blood pressure and sugar tests are also important because lifestyle diseases like diabetes are rising fast in India.

This noble work is the result of the combined efforts of three organisations. AITWA is leading the initiative and managing the health services. BLR Logistics Ltd has provided financial support under its CSR project. Meanwhile, M D Motors ATS has provided the necessary rooms, kitchen, and other infrastructure for the clinic’s operation. Through the cooperation of these three organisations, a vital and praiseworthy step has been taken for the health and safety of the truck driver community.

Joint efforts like this are becoming more common in India. Experts believe public and private partnerships are needed to improve driver welfare. In the past, driver rest stops and health camps were limited. But now, there is growing awareness that drivers must be treated with respect and care, as they play a key role in the economy.

Representatives of the organisations shared their views on the success and purpose of this initiative. The representative from AITWA said the clinic will provide quick and full health services, which is the core goal of the ‘Highway Hero+’ initiative, acting as a protector for drivers on the road. The representative from BLR Logistics Ltd added that with CSR support, this initiative offers a strong and modern health service system for truck drivers. This shows that the corporate sector is now serious about driver health.

This clinic may also inspire similar centres across India. With lakhs of drivers travelling long distances daily, such clinics can improve lives and bring peace of mind to their families. Healthy drivers also mean safer roads for everyone.

Transporters, fleet owners, and vehicle owners have been requested to send as many drivers as possible to benefit from this important health service. For more information, drivers can contact M D Motors ATS, Bakrol Centre, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This effort stands as a hopeful step towards giving India’s highway heroes the care and respect they truly deserve.
