Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) launches women’s Wushu league, Ashmita Khelo India

In a monumental step toward empowering women in combat sports, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) has announced the launch of the Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League, the first-ever women’s Wushu competition at RRU University Gandhinagar Campus. The event is scheduled from April 3rd to April 7th, 2025.  The aim is to celebrate and amplify the role of women in sports, particularly in the field of Wushu—a martial art that requires both physical strength and mental agility.

This initiative is part of the Khelo India program, an ambitious scheme by the Government of India to foster talent and boost the sporting culture across the nation. The Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League will offer a professional stage for young female martial artists, where they can compete, hone their skills, and gain the recognition they deserve.

The Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League is expected to attract over 500 athletes from across the country, competing in various divisions, including junior and sub-junior categories. These young women will compete in a range of exciting and action-packed events, showcasing their resilience, discipline, and skill. The competition will not only highlight their athleticism but will also provide a platform to empower young women, motivating them to pursue sports professionally.

The league is an important milestone in the journey of women’s sports in India, where opportunities and recognition have often been limited. With a focus on excellence and fairness, the league aims to create a robust sporting ecosystem that nurtures and supports young female talent in combat sports.

One of the most exciting aspects of the Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League is the generous cash prizes and career advancement opportunities for top players. The competition will reward the top eight athletes with cash prizes as follows:

  • Gold Medalist: ₹20,000
  • Silver Medalist: ₹15,000
  • Joint Bronze Medalists: ₹10,000 each
  • Other Top 4 Players: ₹5,000 each

This prize distribution totals an impressive ₹21,75,000, ensuring that the efforts and achievements of the athletes are acknowledged. However, the rewards go beyond monetary compensation. The top players will gain direct access to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), where they will receive world-class training and professional development opportunities. This exposure will help them compete at both national and international levels, further enhancing their sports careers.

The Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League is not just another sporting event; it is a major step toward fostering a culture of sportsmanship, equality, and empowerment among women in India. Rashtriya Raksha University has always been a pioneer in promoting equal opportunities for women in various fields, and sports are no exception. The university’s leadership, under the visionary guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, has consistently worked toward breaking barriers and creating platforms where young female athletes can flourish.

In a statement, Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, Vice-Chancellor of RRU, highlighted the significance of the league and its alignment with the university’s broader mission. “Our goal is to create an environment where young female athletes feel encouraged, supported, and motivated to pursue sports professionally. The Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League represents our commitment to providing a nurturing platform for female athletes to shine.”

The launch of the Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League is not only about the competition itself but about creating a lasting impact on women’s sports in India. By offering professional exposure, financial support, and direct access to national sports infrastructure, the league aims to set the stage for future champions. The league will help identify the most promising talents who can go on to represent India on the global stage, giving them the tools and resources they need to succeed.

As interest in Wushu continues to grow across India, the Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League is poised to become an annual event that serves as a stepping stone for young athletes to reach greater heights. The event will inspire future generations of women to pursue their dreams in combat sports, and it promises to be a game-changer in the field of women’s athletics in India.

The Ashmita Khelo India Wushu League is a historic event that represents a turning point for women in combat sports. It is a testament to the commitment of Rashtriya Raksha University and the Government of India to empower women, foster talent, and create a sports culture that promotes equality and excellence. As this league unfolds, it will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of female athletes who will continue to break barriers and achieve greatness.
