According to legendary Shane Warne, Virat Kohli was an “inspirational leader” in his own right, and without his love for the game’s traditional format, Test cricket’s popularity would have waned in some other countries (January 24). Kohli recently stepped down as Test skipper after a 1-2 loss to a poor South African side, but the leg-spin wizard’s greatest achievement is as the preeminent flag-bearer of cricket’s most difficult form.
“Virat was an excellent leader who instilled confidence in his colleagues. On the tactical side, I believe he might have done better, but as a leader, I believe he consistently inspired his teammates.
For Warne, Kohli’s promotion of Test cricket has raised his admiration for the former India captain by a factor of ten. “First and foremost, I have nothing but admiration for Virat Kohli. He’s a fantastic cricketer and a fantastic ambassador for the game, in my opinion. “I think we should all congratulate Virat Kohli and the BCCI for promoting Test cricket and making it the most popular format,” said the 709-wicket holder.
Warne believes that if Kohli and the Indian cricket board had not stood firm in preserving the Test format, several other countries might have lost interest in the modern era of T20 leagues.
“If you want to put yourself to the test in cricket, you should play Test cricket.” The test is the most difficult aspect of our sport. Many other countries might have dropped out if India and Virat Kohli hadn’t emphasized Test cricket, but Virat pushed Test cricket hard.
Warne has been blown away by the positive reception to the documentary thus far. “I’m quite proud of it, and the response has been incredible.” People have fawned over it and been inspired by it, so I decided to do it because I’ve been in the spotlight for over 30 years.
