“Felt a Warm Welcome Here”: International stars of the Tennis Premier League share their experience of playing Season 7 in Ahmedabad
Two days into the seventh season of the Tennis Premier League (TPL), the league’s growing global image has received strong support from players of different age groups. TPL is now known as one of India’s most exciting tennis leagues, bringing together top national players and well-known international names. It has become popular for its short, fast and easy-to-watch format, which attracts young fans and new viewers. For many players, TPL also offers a friendly environment that feels more welcoming than many international tournaments, which often stay very formal.
Players from both the experienced and younger generations have shared praise for the league. Many said that TPL’s strong organisation, simple rules, team spirit and warm hospitality are major reasons for its fast rise outside India. This season, Damir Dzumhur, former World No. 23, representing Yesh Mumbai Eagles, and Dalibor Svrcina, a rising young player from the Czech Republic playing for Chennai Smashers, shared their first impressions and spoke about TPL’s growing global reach.
Damir Dzumhur, one of the most experienced names in the league, has played on the biggest tennis stages in the world. He has faced top players like Carlos Alcaraz and has been a strong performer on the ATP Tour. Before coming to India, he already knew about TPL. Many international players who took part in past seasons had told him about its smooth management and positive team environment. TPL’s team format is similar to events like the Davis Cup, where players stand together and share strategies. Dzumhur has played Davis Cup for 15 years for Bosnia and Herzegovina and said he enjoys that sense of unity. He shared that many players often feel lonely on the ATP circuit because they travel alone, so a team event feels refreshing.
Speaking about TPL’s short format, he said he liked the idea of a 25-point match. It helps new viewers follow tennis more easily. Most Grand Slam matches last many hours, and not everyone has the time or interest to sit through such long games. The TPL format keeps the energy high throughout, which helps create a stadium atmosphere similar to fast-paced sports like badminton or table tennis. Many sports experts have said that shorter match formats help attract younger audiences worldwide, and TPL has used this trend well.
Dzumhur also praised the playing conditions in Ahmedabad. The courts are known for their smooth surface and good bounce, making them suitable for both attacking players and defensive players. Ahmedabad’s weather in December is cool and dry, which is ideal for outdoor tennis. He said the practice areas, lighting and support facilities were excellent, matching the standards seen at international ATP events. He added that he looks forward to returning in future seasons because of the positive experience.
Representing the young generation of international players, Dalibor Svrcina shared similar thoughts. He recently entered the top 100 ATP rankings and has built a reputation for strong baseline play. For him, TPL is a chance to play high-speed matches, learn quicker decision-making and face different playing styles in a short time. He said that the facilities, hotel arrangements and support staff were all very good. Many international players often struggle with long travel days and sudden climate changes, but he said the organisers made sure that players felt comfortable from the moment they arrived.
Svrcina also praised the fast-paced TPL format, which keeps players alert and forces them to start strong from the first point. Sports analysts say this helps younger players strengthen their mental toughness. He said the format is easy for fans to understand because they get to see many different players one after another. This constant change keeps the excitement high inside the stadium. He added that India felt like a special country to him, and he would encourage more international players to join TPL for a fresh change in their careers.
With appreciation from experienced stars like Dzumhur and rising talents like Svrcina, TPL’s growing identity is clear. It is not only gaining global recognition but also delivering on its promise of providing a friendly and enjoyable tennis platform. As Season 7 moves ahead, TPL continues to expand its reach, build strong bonds with players and position itself as a tennis league that the general public can easily watch and enjoy.
