Google Celebrates 25 Years: From Dorm Room to Tech Titan

Newzdaddy Tech updates

In the mid-1990s, two smart students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, met at Stanford University. Now, on September 27, 2023, Google is turning 25 years old. Let’s explore how it all began.

Google’s Humble Start

Larry and Sergey were studying computer science, and they had a brilliant idea. They started a project called “BackRub,” which later became the Google search engine. Larry Page figured out a new way to search the internet using math. By 1998, their project was officially named Google, inspired by a very big number called ‘Googol.’

They didn’t have a fancy office at first. They worked from their Stanford dorm room. Then they moved to a garage in California, where they had computers and a ping pong table. This garage became their home as they worked hard to make the internet better.

More Than Just Search

Today, Google does a lot more than search. They have products like YouTube, Android (the software many phones use), Gmail (where we send emails), and Google Maps (which helps us find places).

In 2000, Google became the main search engine for Yahoo. They started making money from ads with something called AdWords. It’s how they make a lot of their money now.

Gmail and Big Storage

In 2004, Google made Gmail. It was special because it gave us a lot of space for emails—1GB! That’s a big deal. It helped Google beat YahooMail and Hotmail. They also became a public company that year, which means people could buy their stock.

Getting Into Phones and Videos

Google didn’t stop with search and email. In 2005, they got into phones by buying Android. They also launched Google Talk. Then in 2006, they bought YouTube, where we watch videos.

More Big Moves

Google kept growing. They bought DoubleClick in 2007 for online ads. They made it easier to find stuff by adding a Universal search in 2007. In 2008, they made their own phone called the T-Mobile G1 and a web browser called Chrome. They even made glasses called Google Glass.

Looking Ahead

Now, Sundar Pichai is the CEO of Google. He says Google’s future is in something called AI, which is like smart computer programs. Google wants to keep being the best at what they do, but the next 25 years might need even more cool ideas.

So, from a small dorm room to changing the way we use the internet, Google’s 25-year journey is quite amazing!
