Indian Coast Guard Marks 48 Years of Service: A Chronicle of Achievements

From Humble Beginnings to Maritime Guardians
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated its 48th Raising Day on February 1, 2024. Since its inception in 1977 with just 7 surface platforms, the ICG has transformed into a formidable force boasting 152 ships and 78 aircraft. By 2030, it aims to reach 200 surface platforms and 100 aircraft, reflecting its commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
Dedicated to its motto “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect), the ICG has saved over 11,554 lives since its establishment, with 200 lives rescued in 2023 alone. With round-the-clock vigilance, the ICG deploys 50 to 60 ships and 10 to 12 aircraft daily, ensuring the safety and security of India’s maritime zones.
To combat threats posed by anti-nationals and smugglers, the ICG has intensified maritime law enforcement, resulting in the seizure of weapons, contraband, and narcotics worth ₹15,343 crores since its inception. The acquisition of indigenous assets aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘AATMANIRBHAR BHARAT ABHIYAN‘ missions, with the ICG pioneering the induction of indigenous ships, aircraft, and equipment.
Efforts towards digitization have led to transformative agreements, including the Digital Coast Guard (DCG) mission, aimed at achieving a paperless office and enhancing operational efficiency. Moreover, the ICG serves as the Central Coordinating Authority for Oil Spill Response in the Indian EEZ, ensuring prompt and effective responses to environmental disasters.

Under the vision of ‘Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar’ (Clean Seas, Safe Seas), nationwide campaigns like ‘Punit Sagar Abhiyan’ have garnered mass participation, reflecting the ICG’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
In the past year, the Government of India has sanctioned the creation of 195 posts, enabling the ICG to fulfill its duties as a credible and reliable maritime force. The recognition and appreciation from the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Defence Minister underscore the remarkable role played by the ICG in safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
As the Indian Coast Guard marches forward, its dedication to protecting lives, preserving marine ecosystems, and upholding national security remains unwavering, reflecting its steadfast commitment to the nation.
