Indian Coast Guard Rescues Nine Seafarers in Daring Mission at Sea

In a remarkable display of bravery and efficiency, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued nine Indian crew members after their vessel, MSV Taj Dhare Haram, sank in the North Arabian Sea on December 26, 2024. The rescue operation, which took place in international waters under challenging sea conditions, was a testament to the power of cross-border cooperation and swift action.

How the Incident Unfolded

The MSV Taj Dhare Haram, a mechanized sailing vessel, was en route from Mundra, Gujarat, to Socotra, Yemen, when disaster struck. The vessel faced rough seas and onboard flooding, which eventually led to its sinking. The distress call was first detected by an Indian Coast Guard Dornier aircraft during a routine surveillance operation.

The alert was immediately communicated to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai and the ICG Regional Headquarters in Gandhinagar. Recognizing the urgency, the MRCC Mumbai also reached out to its counterpart in Karachi, Pakistan, ensuring that mariners in the vicinity were informed about the emergency.

Swift Response by ICGS Shoor

ICGS Shoor, a Coast Guard ship on forward area patrol, was quickly diverted to the location at maximum speed. The ship’s crew initiated an extensive search and rescue operation in collaboration with MRCCs from both India and Pakistan. After several hours of searching, the nine crew members were found approximately 311 km west of Porbandar, Gujarat, within Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region.

The stranded seafarers had abandoned their sinking vessel and were taking shelter in a small liferaft. At around 1600 hrs, they were safely brought aboard ICGS Shoor. The vessel reportedly sank shortly after the crew was rescued, marking a narrow escape for the seafarers.

Medical Checkups and Safety

Once aboard ICGS Shoor, the survivors were thoroughly examined by the onboard medical team. Fortunately, all nine crew members were found to be in good health. The ship is now en route to Porbandar Harbour, where the rescued individuals will be safely disembarked and reunited with their families.

A Testament to Seamanship and Humanity

The successful operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to its motto, “We Protect.” Despite adverse conditions, the team’s coordinated efforts and swift actions ensured that lives were saved. This mission also highlighted the importance of international collaboration in maritime safety, with both India and Pakistan working together to respond to the crisis.

India’s Maritime Guardians

The Indian Coast Guard has consistently demonstrated its dedication to safeguarding lives at sea. Whether conducting rescue missions, ensuring maritime security, or protecting the marine environment, the ICG stands as a pillar of India’s maritime strength.

This operation serves as a reminder of the critical role played by maritime agencies in ensuring the safety of seafarers, especially in challenging conditions. As the survivors of MSV Taj Dhare Haram return safely to shore, their rescue stands as a beacon of hope and humanity in the vast, unpredictable expanse of the ocean.
