TV Stars Reflect On Janmashtami Traditions And Personal Faith

Newz Daddy Entertainment Updates

Deepika Singh (Mangal in COLORS’Mangal Lakshmi):

During childhood in Delhi, crafting the jhaanki (tableau), modelling Krishna’s leela in clay, shopping with mom, and glowing when visitors praised their work. Jhaanki and clay modelling are traditional DIY arts that bring families together creatively and reinforce cultural stories. Childhood rituals around Janmashtami often build strong family bonds. After moving to Mumbai, celebrations changed, but her love for Janmashtami grew. She attends Dahi Handi events organised by NGOs, cheering and giving out trophies. Dahi Handi is a popular public event celebrating Krishna’s playful spirit. Its social outreach through NGO events makes it both festive and community-supportive. At home, they have “Thakur ji” lovingly decorated by her devrani (sister-in-law). Decorating deities at home fosters a sacred, personal space, often maintained lovingly by multiple family members. It deepens devotional bonds. For ten years, she has started the day with an Odissi dance dedicated to the divine. This year, busy with Mangal Lakshmi, she’ll try to record her dance when possible. Odissi is a classical Indian dance form rich in storytelling. Using it as a devotional offering speaks to blending art and worship. The house is decked with decorations and a feast; at midnight, they break their fast together. This year is extra special; the show is winning hearts. Breaking fast at midnight when Krishna is said to be born is a traditional act. Celebrating a show’s success during such moments blends personal and professional joy.

Esha Suryawanshi (Aarohi in Manpasand Ki Shaadi):

As a Marathi mulgi (girl), she feels an unspoken bond with Janmashtami traditions, music, and community spirit.  Maharashtra celebrates Janmashtami with devotional chants, such as “Hare Krishna,” dhol beats, and mass Dahi Handi events, creating regional fervour. The festival carries its unique symphony, the rhythm of dhol, the chorus of bhajans, and playfulness spreading into the streets.  Bhajans and percussion instruments make Janmashtami a sensory, celebratory experience. Music plays a huge role in cultural cohesion. Watching Dahi Handi felt like an unfolding adventure. The athletic, daring nature of Dahi Handi captivates audiences, and teams form human pyramids, adding thrill to devotion. As she matured, she understood Kanha’s teachings; celebrations took a deeper turn, now it’s childhood cheer plus timeless teachings. Krishna’s teachings from the Bhagavad Gita or stories of compassion bring moral depth to the festivities.  The city transforms into a living celebration; this year feels more profound. d her debut show is blessed by Kanha and loved by audiences. When personal milestones align with festival vibes, celebrations gain emotional depth and symbolic resonance.

Shruti Bhist (in Noyonatra):

She remembers dressing in a bright lehenga, balancing a tiny matki (pot) on her head, laughing, decorating Krishna’s jhoola (swing) with flowers.  Jhoola decorating is a cherished ritual in homes and temples—flowers, colour, and innocence come together in nostalgic form. Those traditions remain close to her heart, and she brings that joy into every celebration. Retaining childhood rituals as an adult keeps the festival grounded in joy and innocence. This year on Noyonatra, Janmashtami is a turning point: Noyonatra receives a divine clue from Krishna that Surjo is in danger. Using mythological cues in TV plots resonates deeply with audiences familiar with Krishna’s role as protector and guide. To her, Krishna’s presence is not just in temples but every moment where love and courage lead. Just as He watches over Noyontara, He watches over all, turning trials into divine play. Krishna’s role as a guardian transcends religious settings; it’s a symbol of inner strength, hope, and transformative love.

Debinna Bonnerjee:

Before Janmashtami, her family journeyed to Mathura and stayed in Vrindavan, heard Hare Krishna Hare Rama chants, performed Julan Seva at Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, visited Bankey Bihari temple, and met Premanand Maharaj ji. Pilgrimages to Krishna’s birthplace intensify spiritual connection. Julan Seva, swinging the deity, is a blissful ritual. Bankey Bihari Temple is one of the most beloved Krishna shrines. Spirituality has been part of her life since childhood; with her children, it became more precious. She’s energised by the soulful trip and carries that to the set of Pati Patni Aur Panga. Praying for the best for everyone this Janmashtami. Bringing spiritually charged energy into one’s work can inspire deeper performance. Family participation in rituals cements multi-generational bonds.
