As Cyclone Montha moves northwestward inland in Andhra Pradesh, it is predicted to progressively weaken into a deep depression.

On Tuesday, Cyclone Montha made landfall near Kakinada on the Andhra Pradesh coast, bringing with it torrential rain and winds that might reach 110 kmph in coastal regions.

Ten significant developments from Cyclone Montha’s effects and aftermath are listed below:

1) Montha made landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Maximum sustained winds from the cyclone were between 90 and 100 kmph, with gusts as high as 110 kmph. Since then, it has diminished into a cyclonic storm.

2) A tree collapsed on an elderly woman’s home in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district, killing her, according to local media sources. In another incident, severe winds uprooted coconut trees in the same area, injuring a boy and an automobile driver.

3) Almost 76,000 people were relocated to safety by the Andhra Pradesh government. 865 tonnes of animal feed were prepared, and more than 219 medical camps were established. In order to remove fallen trees and debris, the government also used 1,040 chainsaws, 321 drones, and 1,447 earthmovers.

4) To protect residents in seven districts—Krishna, Eluru, East and West Godavari, Kakinada, Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema, and portions of Alluri Sitarama Raju—Andhra authorities enforced a vehicle curfew prior to the storm’s impact.

5) On Tuesday and Wednesday morning, Cyclone Montha caused significant interruptions to transit. There were sixteen cancellations at Vijayawada, four at Tirupati, and thirty-two at Visakhapatnam Airport. While the East Coast Railway rerouted multiple services, the South Central Railway cancelled 120 trains throughout its zone.

6) According to officials, Andhra Pradesh damaged horticultural crops on 1.38 lakh hectares and standing crops on over 38,000 hectares. The IMD issued a warning about additional harm to vegetable and paddy farms in flooded low-lying areas.

7) Odisha was also hardest hit by Cyclone Montha, with 15 districts experiencing severe winds and heavy rain. More than 11,000 people were relocated to 2,048 cyclone shelters, according to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi. Nine districts in Odisha have closed their schools and anganwadi centres until October 30.

8) The districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam in Odisha experienced landslides and flooding due to heavy rainfall. Boulders and fallen trees obstructed roads in a number of places, and a house collapsed in the Gajapati district, injuring one person.

As the weakened storm system advances inland as a deep depression, the weather service also forecasts heavy rain in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and West Bengal over the next days.

10) According to IMD, Montha had weakened into a cyclonic storm as of Wednesday morning, with its core located roughly 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur and 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada. As it travels northwestward inland, it is anticipated to progressively weaken into a deep depression.
