On the day of Diwali, another film from the Maddock Horror Universe was released — Thama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna in the main roles, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the main villain. This MACU film brings a new supernatural character to people, a vampire-based story. Let’s talk about how the movie is.
The way the makers are growing this horror-comedy universe, connecting each film with the earlier ones like Stree, Bhediya, and Munja, it’s becoming a very smooth and well-linked universe. Hats off to Dinesh Vijan for this vision. In my screening, they first showed the promo of Shaktishalini, which is the next MACU movie starring Anil Padwa. So, it looks like the team is fully ready to take this universe to the next level.
Now, about the movie, the story is about Alok (played by Ayushmann Khurrana), who goes into a deep forest one day for some adventure. Then a bear attacks him, but Taraka (played by Rashmika Mandanna) saves him. After that, things begin to change. Who is Taraka? What is her community? What are Raktabeej and Betal? You’ll find all these answers in the movie.
In the first half, the film mainly builds a setup, what Thama is, who the vampires and Betal are, what Yakhshas are, and how Alok meets Taraka. The visuals in this part are quite good, especially the bear scene and the world of Betal. I was a bit unsure after watching the trailer, thinking the VFX and CGI would not be great. But no, they did a really good job. The scenes, the background, the tribe, everything looks nice on the big screen.
All actors performed well. Especially Paresh Rawal and Nawaz — it’s refreshing to see their comedy timing again. Nawaz played his role very powerfully, though I wish his part were a little longer. Maybe his role will be used more in future movies because you should not miss the credit scene.
And yes — since it’s a MACU movie, of course, there are cameos. We already saw a glimpse of the werewolf in the trailer. If you watch Hollywood movies, you will know that werewolves and vampires always have a strong rivalry, and it’s set up here too — you’ll see it in the movie. The last credit scene also builds the setup for future films from the villains’ side.
There were some rumours that there might be a Shaktishalini credit scene, but no, you’ll only get its teaser with this film, just a title card shown at the beginning. It might already be on YouTube now.
If you had very high expectations, you might find the comedy a little less than Stree or Stree 2. The comedy is there, but sometimes it works and sometimes it feels flat. The jump scares, though, are quite good. The way they have built the vampire world and shown it from a new point of view for Indian audiences is really interesting. Ayushmann looks very cool as a vampire.
The songs are nice, especially two or three of them, and the background music fits well with the movie’s mood. Overall, it’s a good, decent MACU film that does its job of entertaining the audience.
