Financial Awareness Training strengthens frontline defence against cyber scams

Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), under a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative supported by Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL), conducted a one-day financial awareness and cyber safety training programme at the Commando Training Centre, Lethapora, Pulwama. Held in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on January 23, 2026, the programme brought together personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police for focused learning on financial planning, financial fraud, and cyber fraud prevention and mitigation.

Such training programmes have gained importance in recent years as India moves rapidly towards digital payments, online banking, and paperless financial systems. Law enforcement personnel are not only users of these systems in their personal lives but are also the first point of contact for citizens who face financial fraud. By strengthening their understanding, institutions like Rashtriya Raksha University play a key role in improving both prevention and response at the ground level.

The programme formed part of CDSL’s wider CSR efforts to promote financial literacy and cyber awareness across the country. Depositories like Central Depository Services (India) Limited operate at the heart of India’s financial markets, handling dematerialised securities and investor accounts. With rising cases of phishing, fake investment schemes, and identity theft, their involvement in awareness initiatives reflects a growing understanding that education is one of the strongest tools against financial crime.

The initiative was spearheaded by Mr Mohd Arif Rishu, DIG, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Lethapora. His involvement highlights the increasing focus within police leadership on capacity building beyond traditional policing. Across India, police forces are now receiving regular training in cyber laws, digital evidence, and online fraud investigation, recognising that modern crime often leaves a digital trail rather than a physical one.

The programme began with an inaugural address by Vice Principal SP Sajjad Hussain of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Lethapora. He stressed the importance of financial awareness and cyber vigilance for security personnel working in a fast-changing digital environment. For police personnel, understanding digital risks is not only about personal safety but also about guiding citizens correctly and responding quickly when fraud occurs. Studies have shown that early reporting and correct advice can significantly reduce financial losses in cyber fraud cases.

Subject-matter experts from RRU delivered interactive and practice-based sessions on personal financial planning. These sessions covered simple topics such as budgeting, saving, and understanding financial products, which are often overlooked but form the foundation of financial security. Research shows that individuals with basic financial planning skills are less likely to fall for high-return fraud schemes and misleading loan offers.

The sessions also focused on identifying common financial and cyber fraud. Participants were introduced to real-life examples of online scams, fake customer care calls, fraudulent links, and social engineering tactics. Such frauds are growing in number, especially in regions with increasing internet access. By learning how fraudsters operate, police personnel are better prepared to spot warning signs early and take preventive action.

Practical measures for prevention and mitigation formed a key part of the training. Experts discussed safe digital habits such as strong passwords, careful sharing of personal information, and verifying sources before making financial decisions. They also explained standard procedures for reporting cybercrime and preserving digital evidence, which is critical for successful investigation and prosecution.

Ms Anshu Singh, Assistant Professor at RRU, shared insights into the university’s vision and mandate. She explained how RRU works to advance safety, security education, and citizen awareness across India. Universities focused on security studies are increasingly working with public institutions to ensure that academic knowledge leads to real-world impact, especially through CSR-supported programmes.

Around 150 participants, including inspectors and trainees, attended the programme. The scale of participation reflects a growing interest among police personnel in understanding financial and cyber risks. The training also familiarised them with official mechanisms for reporting suspicious financial and cyber activities, aligning with national efforts to improve digital literacy and economic inclusion.

Participants appreciated the practical nature of the sessions and found them relevant to both their professional duties and personal lives. Many noted that financial and cyber threats are evolving quickly and require constant learning. Feedback from similar programmes across the country shows that such hands-on training improves confidence and decision-making among law enforcement officers.

This initiative reflects the shared commitment of CDSL and Rashtriya Raksha University to building a financially aware and cyber-secure society through targeted, on-ground interventions. By focusing on key stakeholders like the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the programme strengthens institutional readiness and supports safer digital practices at the community level. The successful event marks another meaningful step in RRU’s ongoing mission to promote financial awareness and cybersecurity across India.
