Women Empowerment Workshop Builds Legal Strength at BAOU

Women Empowerment Workshop focuses on safety, dignity and confidence

The one-day women empowerment workshop held under the ‘Setu Programme’ at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University in Ahmedabad reflects a growing national focus on building safe, fair, and equal spaces for women, especially in education and workplaces. Across India, universities are now playing a key role in spreading legal awareness among women, as education is often the first place where confidence and independence take shape.

The collaboration between the university, the Gender Resource Centre, the Department of Women and Child Development, and the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education shows how joint efforts can create a meaningful impact. Such partnerships are important because women-related issues are not limited to one sector. When education and government bodies work together, information reaches more people and becomes easier to understand and apply in real life.

The presence of senior academic leaders and legal experts added strength and trust to the programme. Vice Chancellor Prof Ami Upadhyay’s message matched current thinking in women’s empowerment, which now focuses on moving beyond sympathy and support. Across many awareness programmes in India, experts stress that women should see themselves not only as survivors but as strong individuals who can speak up and take action. Her emphasis on a transparent and fear-free workplace aligns with national workplace safety guidelines, which highlight dignity, respect, and fairness as basic rights.

Legal awareness was the backbone of the workshop, which is especially important because many women hesitate to speak out due to a lack of knowledge. Studies and social surveys have shown that women who understand their legal rights are more confident and more likely to report unfair treatment. This makes legal education a powerful tool for change, particularly in institutions where young women are preparing for professional life.

The insights shared by Judge Dr Jyotsna Yagnik reflected widely accepted legal and social principles. Her advice to resist unfair demands and respond firmly to harassment is strongly supported by legal experts. Early action is often advised in cases of harassment because it helps stop repeated behaviour and protects others as well. Her stress on financial independence reflects research that shows women with their own income are better able to make decisions, seek justice, and maintain self-respect.

The focus on everyday behaviour during the second session brought attention to a key issue. Gender discrimination often begins with small, routine actions that people may ignore or accept. Experts agree that addressing these daily habits is essential for long-term change. When individuals understand how bias appears in normal life, they become more aware and more willing to correct it. Awareness at this level helps build a culture of equality, not just compliance with rules.

The discussion on workplace rights by the university’s Legal Assistant was especially relevant in today’s work environment. Many women are unaware of internal complaint systems, basic legal protections, and proper reporting processes. Research shows that a clear understanding of these systems reduces fear and confusion. When women know how the law works, they feel safer and more secure at work. This also encourages organisations to maintain better standards and accountability.

The smooth conduct of the programme and the structured sessions helped ensure that information was delivered clearly and effectively. Well-managed programmes tend to leave a stronger impression, especially when the audience includes students and first-time learners. A calm and organised environment helps participants focus on learning rather than formality.

The response from participants shows the value of such workshops. Across educational institutions, similar programmes have resulted in improved awareness, confidence, and willingness to discuss sensitive issues. When students, teachers, staff, and citizens come together, the message spreads beyond the campus and reaches families and communities.

Overall, the workshop stands as an example of how education, law, and social awareness can work together to empower women. By keeping the language simple and the message practical, the programme ensured that knowledge was not limited to experts alone. Such efforts help build a future where women are informed, confident, and ready to stand up for their rights with clarity and courage.
