Exhibition in Ahmedabad Honours the Life and Legacy of Rasiklal U. Parikh
Ahmedabad, 30 May 2026: An important exhibition celebrating the life and work of freedom fighter and statesman Rasiklal U. Parikh was opened yesterday at the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA). The exhibition, titled A Visionary Statesman: The Public Life of Rasiklal U. Parikh, was organised to mark his 116th birth anniversary and attracted historians, students, researchers, civic leaders and members of the public.
The exhibition tells the story of a man who played a major role in shaping Saurashtra and later Gujarat after India gained Independence. Through old photographs, documents, letters and historical records, visitors were able to learn about his journey from a freedom fighter to one of the most respected political leaders of his time.
The project was created by Raj Patel, an intern from the Institute of Design at Nirma University, as part of his graduation project. Members of the Parikh family and archival researchers also helped in collecting and studying historical material for the exhibition.
A Leader Who Chose Public Service
Born in Limbdi on 29 May 1910, Rasiklal U. Parikh devoted most of his life to public service. He studied at Bombay University and later at the London School of Economics. Even with a strong educational background, he chose to work for the people rather than follow a private career.
He joined the freedom movement at a young age and actively participated in the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement. His role in these movements led to his imprisonment. Like many freedom fighters of his generation, he spent time in jail for the cause of India’s freedom. Historical records show that he remained committed to the national movement despite these hardships.
A Simple Family Man
Family members remember Rasiklal Parikh as a disciplined and caring person who believed strongly in education, honesty and public duty. According to his granddaughter, Dr Gauri Wagenaar, he inspired many members of the family through his work and values. However, he never forced his children or grandchildren to enter politics. Instead, he encouraged them to follow their own paths and interests.
His family remained closely connected to him throughout his life. Historical photographs and family records displayed at the exhibition show a leader who balanced public responsibilities with family life.
His Life During the Freedom Struggle
While detailed records of his daily routine are limited, historians note that Parikh lived a disciplined life shaped by the values of the freedom movement. Like many Congress leaders of that period, he spent long hours travelling, meeting people, organising political work and participating in public campaigns.
His prison years brought him close to many fellow freedom fighters. These experiences helped build strong friendships and political partnerships that later became important in the formation of Saurashtra State. He worked alongside several leaders who shared the dream of a united and democratic India.
His Role in Building Saurashtra
One of Rasiklal Parikh’s greatest contributions was his work in building Saurashtra after Independence. At a time when many princely states existed across the Kathiawar region, India faced the difficult task of bringing these states together into a single administration.
Parikh played a major role in this historic process. He served as the first Home Minister of Saurashtra and later became its second Chief Minister. During these years, he helped establish administrative systems and strengthen governance in the newly formed state.
He was also closely involved in important events connected with the integration of princely states, including the Junagadh issue and the formation of the Arzi Hukumat. These developments helped bring stability to the region during a challenging period in India’s history.
Parikh is widely remembered for introducing and supporting land reforms in Saurashtra. At a time when large areas of land were controlled by a small number of landlords, he worked to create a fairer system for farmers.
His efforts helped many farming families gain greater security and improved opportunities. These reforms became one of the most important achievements of his political career and earned him respect across Gujarat.
A Lasting Legacy
Rasiklal U. Parikh later served in important positions in the governments of Saurashtra, Bombay State and Gujarat. He was also a member of India’s Constituent Assembly, which helped shape the country’s Constitution. Throughout his career, he remained committed to public service, democratic values and institution building.
The exhibition at AMA offers visitors a chance to understand the challenges faced by leaders during the early years of Independent India. It also reminds people of the contribution made by Rasiklal U. Parikh in building modern Saurashtra and Gujarat.
For many visitors, the exhibition is not just about history. It is also about remembering a leader whose work helped shape the future of an entire region and whose legacy continues to inspire new generations.
