HDFC Bank Reaches 1.8 Lakh in Cyber Fraud Awareness Drive

HDFC Bank Reaches 1.8 Lakh Citizens Through Cyber Fraud Awareness Drive

The bank held more than 8,800 workshops across India between July and October 2026, covering online scams, safe digital banking and ways to report fraud.

HDFC Bank has conducted more than 8,800 cyber fraud awareness workshops across India over four months, reaching more than 1.8 lakh citizens between July and October 2026. The campaign, called Cyber Fraud Suraksha, aimed to help people recognise online scams and protect their money while using digital banking services.

The workshops addressed a growing concern for people who use mobile phones, internet banking, digital payment apps and online shopping services. Fraudsters often use fake messages, phone calls, websites and mobile applications to trick people into sharing private banking details or sending money to unknown accounts.

HDFC Bank held sessions for school and college students, senior citizens, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), corporate offices, community groups, self-help groups, customers and bank employees. The sessions used real-life examples, stories and videos to explain how online fraud works and what people can do to avoid becoming victims.

The campaign covered several types of scams, including digital arrest fraud, investment scams, fake job offers, Android Package Kit (APK) file scams and QR code fraud. Each method can involve a different trick, but many depend on persuading victims to act quickly or share information that should remain private.

In digital arrest scams, criminals may pose as police officers or officials from government agencies. They can threaten people with arrest or legal action and demand money to settle a made-up case. Such calls may appear convincing because the callers use official-sounding language, fake documents or video calls.

Investment fraud is another concern. Scammers may promise high returns, use fake trading platforms or persuade people to transfer money into accounts they control. Job scams can involve fake vacancies, requests for registration fees or demands for payment before a person can start work.

APK scams often involve messages asking users to download an application outside an official app store. A harmful app may seek access to messages, contacts or other information on a phone. Fraudsters can use this access to obtain private details or interfere with banking activity.

QR code scams also require care. A person may believe they are receiving money after scanning a code, when the action could instead lead to a payment from their account. Users should check the transaction details on their screen before approving any payment.

The workshops also covered safe net banking and online shopping. Participants were advised to protect their one-time passwords (OTPs), card verification values (CVVs), debit and credit card details, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) PINs. These details should never be shared with another person, even if the caller claims to represent a bank or government department.

HDFC Bank also referred to its Vigil Aunty cyber safety awareness initiative during the sessions. The programme forms part of the bank’s efforts to communicate online safety advice to customers and the wider public.
