Adani Green Energy Gujarat Shocks World With 5GW

Adani Green Energy Delivers on 5 GW Commitment in FY26, Marking a Global High for Greenfield Expansion

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest pure-play renewable energy company, added 5 GW+ (5,051 MW) of renewable energy capacity in the financial year 2025–26, taking its total operational portfolio to 19.3 gigawatts (GW). It is the highest greenfield annual capacity expansion globally by any company, excluding China.

This scale of growth stands out when compared with global renewable trends. Most countries struggle to add even 1–2 GW of clean power in a year due to land, funding, and regulatory delays. In India, however, strong policy support and rising power demand have pushed companies like AGEL to move faster. Reports from global energy bodies show that India is now among the top three markets for solar growth, and projects like this are a key reason why.

The new capacity addition includes 3.4 GW (3,409 MW) of solar, 0.7 GW (686 MW) of wind and 1 GW (956 MW) of wind-solar hybrid capacity. It is expected to offset around 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, and AGEL’s total operational portfolio of 19.3 GW will result in a massive annual carbon offset of 36 million tonnes.

To understand the impact, 36 million tonnes of carbon savings is equal to removing millions of petrol cars from the roads each year. India has committed under the global climate goals to reduce emissions intensity and increase the share of clean energy. Large hybrid projects, which combine solar and wind, are now seen as more reliable because they generate power both day and night. This reduces pressure on coal-based plants and helps stabilise the grid.

Most of the new capacity was commissioned at the world’s largest renewable energy plant, being developed by AGEL at an accelerated pace in the barren land at Khavda, Gujarat. Built across 538 sq kms, the project is spread across an area five times the size of Paris. Out of the planned 30 GW by 2029 at Khavda, AGEL has already installed a cumulative capacity of 9.4 GW (9,413 MW) at the site.

Energy experts say projects of this size are rare outside China. The Khavda site is often compared with mega solar parks in the Middle East and the US, but its speed of execution makes it unique. The use of dry, unused land also reduces conflict with farming communities, which has been a major issue in many energy projects across the world.

“Our addition of over 5 GW of new capacity marks a watershed moment for India’s renewable energy sector, placing the country firmly on the global map of leading the clean energy transition. It marks a significant leap in accelerating the country’s shift to a low-carbon economy and strengthening energy security. Our team’s dedication and hard work have enabled this landmark achievement, and they have consistently proved that ultra-large-scale renewable energy deployment is not only possible but also executable. This milestone strengthens our progress towards our target of 50 GW by 2030, while continuing to deliver sustainable and inclusive growth through renewables and energy storage solutions,” said Mr Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL.

India’s energy security has become a major topic in recent years. With rising fuel imports and global price shocks, renewable energy offers a stable and local source of power. Experts from agencies like the International Energy Agency have noted that countries investing early in renewables will have better control over future energy costs.

Further, the company also brought online an initial 1,376 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at Khavda, one of the world’s largest single-location deployments. The capacity was commissioned within eight months of starting work at the site, supporting grid stability and renewable integration.

Battery storage is becoming a key part of modern energy systems. Solar power is only available during the day, and wind can be unpredictable. Storage systems help save excess power and supply it when demand rises. Countries like Australia and the United States are already investing heavily in battery projects, and India is now catching up quickly with large-scale deployments like this.

The Khavda project deploys advanced bifacial solar modules, which generate electricity from both sides by capturing sunlight directly and from reflections off the ground, along with solar trackers to maximise electricity generation. It also deploys 5.2 MW wind turbines, among the most powerful onshore units globally. The use of waterless robotic cleaning systems leads to near-zero usage of water for module cleaning and improves operational efficiency.

These technologies are important in regions like Gujarat, where water is limited. Traditional solar plants require regular water cleaning due to dust. Robotic cleaning saves both water and cost. Bifacial panels can increase energy output by up to 10–15 percent, making projects more efficient without extra land use.

AGEL continues to strengthen its environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices. The company was ranked first in the Global Top 100 Green Utilities list for 2025 by Energy Intelligence and retained its position as India’s top sustainability performer in the power sector for the second consecutive year by NSE Sustainability Ratings and Analytics.

Strong ESG performance is now a key factor for global investors. Funds and institutions are choosing companies that follow clean and responsible practices. This helps companies like AGEL attract more international investment, which in turn supports faster expansion of renewable energy in India.
