Tarana Burke, an American civil rights activist, and sexual assault survivor, coined the term and started the MeToo Movement in 2006. After the Harvey Weinstein affair came to light in 2017, what began as a local grassroots effort acquired worldwide traction as #metoo went viral. Over the course of several years, the movement brought to light untold experiences of women who had been sexually harassed by predators. The skeletons had finally emerged from their hiding places!

the long-awaited verdict in the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial. On social media, there has been a steady stream of tweets and discussions in support of Depp. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to claim that the trial drew the attention of the entire world. The case has finally come to a conclusion, with the jury siding with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor. Heard is now obligated to pay Depp $15 million in damages. #MenToo quickly became a trending topic on Twitter following his historic triumph.

Men can be victims of domestic violence, too, according to the tweets, which were generally supportive of Depp. “Today’s triumph sends a signal,” British author Greg Ellis remarked on Twitter. The jury had its say. We’d reached a decision. The verdict was unmistakable. The truth triumphed. “It’s been six years.”

“‘Tell the rest of the world, Johnny.’ Tell them that I, Johnny Depp, am a domestic abuse victim. Check to see if the judge and jury agree with you.’ This man was believed by the jury, the judge, and the entire world. Another supporter of Depp tweeted, “He waited 6 years and shared his truth, and his truth is now precedence for #MenToo #JohnnyDepp.”

While some on the internet are ecstatic over Depp’s victory, others have expressed their disappointment. “Amber Heard did not even name her accuser,” wrote journalist Moira Donegan. Who will be the next lady to speak up? What kind of woman is willing to talk to a reporter? What lady would trust a buddy with her secrets? In many ways, #MeToo was a women’s free speech movement. This response has worrying implications for free speech.”

The much-discussed case concerned a lawsuit filed by Depp against Heard in December 2018 in The Washington Post, in which she described herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”

While the Virginia jury found Amber Heard’s piece defamatory to Johnny Depp, it also decided that Heard had been defamed by one of Depp’s lawyers, who claimed that she had staged a detailed hoax that involved roughing up the couple’s flat to make it appear worse for cops. She was granted $2 million by the jury.
