Apollo CVHF Hospital Launches Robotic Cardiac Surgery Unit

Apollo CVHF Hospital Launches Gujarat’s First Dedicated Robotic Cardiac Surgery Unit With The Addition of The Second Da Vinci Xi Surgical System

Apollo CVHF Hospital Opens Gujarat’s First Dedicated Robotic Cardiac Surgery Unit

Apollo CVHF Hospital has opened Gujarat’s first dedicated Robotic Cardiac Surgery Unit after adding a second Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System to its cardiac programme. Hospital officials said the expansion will allow more patients to undergo minimally invasive heart surgery and increase the hospital’s robotic surgery capacity with two dedicated Centres of Excellence for robotic cardiac procedures.

Apollo CVHF Hospital said its robotic cardiac surgery programme has already completed more than 75 robotic heart operations under the leadership of Dr. Sudhir Adalati, Senior CVTS Surgeon. The hospital stated that these procedures have been carried out using minimally invasive techniques for selected patients requiring complex cardiac surgery.

The newly added Da Vinci Xi system is designed to help surgeons perform delicate operations through small incisions instead of opening the chest through a full sternotomy in many suitable cases. The robotic platform provides surgeons with high-definition three-dimensional views of the surgical area and robotic instruments that can move with greater flexibility inside the body than standard surgical tools. Surgeons continue to control every movement of the robotic system throughout the procedure.

Robotic-assisted cardiac surgery has gradually become available at selected specialist hospitals in India during the past decade. Apollo Hospitals launched India’s first dedicated robot-assisted cardiac surgery unit in Bengaluru several years ago, marking an early step in expanding the technology for heart procedures in the country. Since then, a limited number of advanced cardiac centres have introduced similar programmes for carefully selected patients.

Medical experts say robotic surgery is not suitable for every heart patient. Eligibility depends on factors such as the patient’s medical condition, the type of heart disease, previous operations and overall health. Conventional open-heart surgery continues to remain the standard treatment for many complex cases, while robotic surgery is considered an option for selected patients where doctors believe the minimally invasive approach can provide clinical benefits.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Sameer Dani, CEO & Director, Apollo CVHF Hospitals and Director – Department of Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, said:

“The launch of Gujarat’s first dedicated Robotic Cardiac Surgery Unit represents an important step in our commitment to making advanced cardiac care more accessible to patients across the region. The addition of a second Da Vinci Xi system enhances our ability to deliver highly precise, minimally invasive cardiac procedures while expanding access to world-class robotic surgery. As cardiovascular disease continues to rise, investing in advanced technology alongside experienced clinical expertise remains central to improving patient outcomes and setting new standards in cardiac care.”

Doctors say robotic-assisted cardiac surgery can offer several advantages over conventional open-heart surgery for suitable patients. These may include smaller surgical cuts, reduced blood loss, lower risk of infection, less pain after surgery, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. Patients may also return to normal daily activities sooner. However, specialists note that treatment decisions are based on individual medical assessments rather than the availability of robotic technology alone.

Commenting on the programme, Dr. Sudhir Adalati, Senior CVTS Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, said:

“Robotic cardiac surgery combines surgical expertise with advanced technology to perform complex heart procedures through a minimally invasive approach. The enhanced visualisation and instrument precision offered by the Da Vinci Xi system allow us to perform intricate procedures with greater accuracy while reducing the physical impact of surgery on patients. Having successfully completed more than 75 robotic cardiac surgeries, we have witnessed consistent clinical benefits in terms of faster recovery, shorter hospital stays and improved patient experience. The addition of a second robotic platform will further strengthen our ability to deliver advanced cardiac care to more patients.”

Apollo CVHF Hospital is a specialised heart and vascular care centre in Ahmedabad and operates as part of the Apollo Hospitals network. The hospital focuses exclusively on cardiovascular medicine and offers services ranging from preventive cardiology and interventional procedures to cardiac surgery and intensive care. It serves patients from Gujarat as well as neighbouring states seeking advanced treatment for heart disease.

Also present during the launch was Cdr. Jelson Kavalakkat, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, who said:

“Apollo Hospitals has consistently invested in technologies that improve clinical outcomes while enhancing the patient experience. The addition of our second Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System further strengthens Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad’s leadership in robotic-assisted surgery, expanding our robotic surgery ecosystem and enhancing our ability to deliver advanced minimally invasive care across specialities. The launch of Gujarat’s first dedicated Robotic Cardiac Surgery Unit reflects our continued commitment to combining world-class technology with specialised clinical expertise, making globally benchmarked care more accessible to patients across the region.”

With the addition of the second Da Vinci Xi robotic system, Apollo CVHF Hospital has increased its capacity to perform robotic-assisted cardiac procedures while strengthening its position as one of the specialised centres for minimally invasive heart surgery in western India. Hospital officials said the expanded facility is expected to improve access to robotic cardiac surgery for eligible patients from Gujarat and surrounding regions.
