Unlike classic documentaries, Acharya calls Sur Shabdanu Samamu a “lifeography.” He says, “A documentary and a lifeography have a narrow line separating each other. While a lifeography explores deeper and tells a more intimate and personal story, documentaries follow facts and images. His life narrative on Avinash Vyas is set to include personal tales, struggles, and the cultural influence of his work in addition to the career turning points. With English subtitles, this two-hour movie is open to a larger audience independent of linguistic obstacles.

A Legacy of Inspired Music

Renowned in Indian film for over 1200 compositions in Gujarati and Hindi films, Padmashri Avinash Vyas is still one of the most revered personalities in Indian film. His music speaks across generations with famous songs like “Dekh Tere Sansar Ki Haalat” and “Tere Dwar Khada Ek Jogi.” The lifeography of Acharya seeks to underline the amazing adaptability and richness of Vyas’s work, which spans film music, folk ballads, and cultural works that have grown as part of India’s rich musical legacy.

Acharya remembers how Umar Kolsawala motivated him to start this initiative. Working on Dastan E Rafi, Kolsawala proposed a similar homage for Avinash Vyas based on his lifeography of Mohammad Rafi. The concept originated with Acharya meeting Avinash’s son Gaurang Vyas, who told tales and provided priceless analysis of his father’s life.

Acharya filmed in Mumbai, Mahua, Porbandar, and Ahmedabad, piecing the soul of each location into the narrative to bring this project to life. More than thirty celebrities—including well-known musicians and artists—volunteered to share their experiences with Vyas, so augmenting the story with first-hand tales. Every memory they had attests to Vyas’s impact on Indian music and reflects the respect he still enjoys from all around the business.

Vinay Patel is the Co-director and editor; Prakash Karlekar is the Director of Photography on Acharya’s crew for this project. Takshila Multimedia Production is producing the movie, bringing their knowledge to produce an aesthetically and emotionally interesting experience.

Acharya points up the financial difficulties in compiling a lifeography. “Lifeographies are a niche,” he says, “and finding buyers for such detailed works on legendary artists isn’s easy.” Sur Shabdanu Samamu is a labour of passion having invested more than 25 lakh rupees and four years of effort. Shemaroo intervened, giving Indian and foreign viewers a chance to see this homage to Avinash Vyas, even though many OTT platforms were reluctant to accept the project because of revenue-sharing policies.
