India’s First Made-In-India Is Commissioned by the Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla’s first megawatt-scale green hydrogen plant

The first “Make-in-India” 1 Megawatt Green Hydrogen Plant in India was put into service today by the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. In the august presence of Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon. Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri T.K. Ramachandran, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, and senior Port and L&T officials, the plant was inaugurated by Hon. Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways. This milestone is an important step towards India’s Net Zero pledge and a proud monument to the country’s growth under the visionary leadership of Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The Honourable Minister expressed gratitude for how quickly this project was put on hold. He noted that on May 26, 2025, the Hon. Prime Minister visited Bhuj and laid the foundation stone for a 10 MW Green Hydrogen Plant. In just four months, the first module of a 1 megawatt plant was put into service as part of a 10 megawatt project, setting a new standard for project execution for the nation’s green hydrogen sector. He said DPA has shown Speed, Scale, and Skill in action brightly.

A Made-In-India Megawatt-scale Green Hydrogen facility that can produce about 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen a year has been operationalised at DPA, making it the first port in India to do so. This innovation strengthens India’s position as a global leader in sustainable port operations, representing a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization.

The Hon’ble Minister praised DPA’s past achievements, including the deployment of India’s first Made-in-India all-electric Green Tug, and commended the Port’s ongoing commitment to green projects. In order to encourage other ports to embrace creative and environmentally responsible solutions, he hailed the commissioning of a completely Aatma-Nirbhar, future-ready hydrogen ecosystem that was constructed exclusively by Indian engineers.

The Honourable Minister congratulated the whole Deendayal Port Authority team, led by the Chairman, and also thanked the L&T engineers for completing this intricate project with such accuracy and efficiency.

Leading by example and promoting innovation under national priorities, the Deendayal Port Authority is at the vanguard of India’s transition to a greener maritime future.
