Bridging the Gender Gap in India’s Renewable Energy Sector
ReNew, in partnership with SEWA and UNEP India, recently organized a crucial stakeholder consultation in Gujarat, aiming to advance the participation of women in the renewable energy sector. The event brought together key figures from the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, and prominent players in the renewable energy industry.
Tackling Challenges and Seizing Opportunities
Senior officials engaged in discussions focused on addressing the challenges hindering women’s involvement in the renewable energy field. The dialogue delved into the existing opportunities aligned with India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW in renewable energy. Furthermore, participants explored the industry’s role in fostering skilled human resources to bridge the gender gap.

The consultation was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Vinit Kumar (IAS), CEO of KVIC, Bhakti Shamal, Joint Secretary, Energy, Gujarat, and Ajay Prakash (IAS), Head of Gujarat Energy Development Agency. ReNew’s Chief Operating Officer, Balram Mehta, played a pivotal role in the discussions, joined by Atul Bagai, Head of the UNEP India Office, and Reema Nanavaty, Director of SEWA.
ReNew’s Commitment to Women in Renewable Energy
Balram Mehta, COO of ReNew, shared insights into the company’s proactive role in establishing an ecosystem that encourages women’s participation in technical roles at ReNew’s sites. Highlighting their achievements, Mehta emphasized that over 26% of ReNew’s manufacturing employees are women. The company has set an ambitious target of having 30% women in its workforce by the year 2030.
Creating Pathways for Women in Technical Jobs
The event shed light on ReNew’s commitment to breaking gender barriers in the traditionally male-dominated field of renewable energy. By actively involving women in technical roles, ReNew aims not only to meet its internal workforce diversity goals but also to contribute to a broader societal shift towards gender inclusivity in the renewable energy sector.
