The In Memoriam portion of the Oscars 2022 did not honour late singer Lata Mangeshkar or late actor Dilip Kumar. Several artists were honored, including Sidney Poitier, Betty White, and Ivan Reitman.

The 94th Academy Awards 2022’s In Memoriam section paid honour to artists and filmmakers from around the world who died last year. Among them were Sidney Poitier, Betty White, Ivan Reitman, and Stephen Sondheim, to name a few. The section, however, did not pay tribute to two Indian superstars who passed away recently: singer Lata Mangeshkar and actor Dilip Kumar.

I was hoping for a mention of #LataMangeshkar in the #Oscars In Memoriam. But, well…” remarked a Twitter follower. Another user said, “#Oscars2022 #LataMangeshkar of #Bollywood fame – Nightingale of India – not even mentioned among the cinema people who passed away in the last year.”

On February 6th, Lata Mangeshkar, who was 92 years old at the time of her death, passed away. She’d been accepted into the program.

On January 8, she was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital after being diagnosed with Covid-19 and pneumonia.

She began her career at the age of 13 in 1942, when she was born on September 28, 1929. Over the course of her seven-decade career, the melody queen recorded over a thousand Hindi film songs. Her songs have been recorded in more than 36 regional Indian and other languages.

In 2001, she received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. During her singing career, she was honored with three National Film Awards, among many other accolades. Her songs include Aye Mere Vatan Ke Logon, Babul Pyare, and Lag Ja Gale, among others.

After a long illness, Dilip Kumar died on July 7, 2017, at the age of 98 at the PD Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai. In June, he was brought to the hospital after experiencing spells of shortness of breath. For the past few years, the actor had been battling illness, especially lung problems, and had been in and out of hospitals. In masterpieces like Mughal-e-Azam and Devdas, he played the brooding, impassioned lover. Naya Daur, Ram Aur Shyam, Kranti, Karma, and Saudagar were among his many films over his five-decade career.

Filmmakers Jean-Marc Vallee and Lina Wertmüller, visual effects artists Robert Blalack and Douglas Trumbull, actor William Hurt, actress Sally Kellerman, and Mexican icon Carmen Salinas were also honored at the Oscars on Sunday.
