Critical Review: “Get Set Go”

Gujarati movie “Get Set Go” arrives with a simple crime story, a brisk pace and a cast that does much of the heavy lifting. The 148-minute film follows a group of Robin Hood-style thieves who target corrupt people and wealthy individuals before sending the stolen money to charities.

The main excitement of the movie is cycling. I am sure many of you, after watching the movie, will once again go back to your cycle and do “Get Set Go”.

The basic plot can be explained in a few lines, and the screenplay follows the same simple path. There are no major twists or turns. Some of the film’s situations also ask the audience to set logic aside, particularly when the story deals with money and cryptocurrency transfers. Compared with the complexity often seen in crime web series, these parts move ahead with very little difficulty.

The screenplay is one of the strong points of Get Set Go. Scenes arrive at a steady pace, and the story rarely pauses for long. The film does not spend much time on scenes that add little to the plot.

The flashback involving Kavya and VD is one section that could have been shorter, but most of the film maintains its pace.

Director Arnav Kumar handles the straightforward material with control. The film moves from one development to the next without losing momentum. The camera angles and the close-up shots of each Chiranjeevi during their entry in the movie enhance the excitement and thrill.

The cuts and transitions help maintain the flow, and the film does not often feel as though it has suddenly jumped from one situation to another. Fade-to-black transitions are used at suitable points and add to the way some scenes land.

The cinematography by Tapan Vyas gives the film much of its visual energy. The camera becomes more active during scenes that need speed and tension, while quieter moments use close-ups effectively, especially the extreme close-up shots.

One of the better examples is the scene involving Muni Jha, who plays the police commissioner; a close-up captures the character’s inner conflict without needing much action around him. The canal sequence stands out for its aerial photography and is among the film’s strongest visual moments.

The lighting and colour work also give the film a lively appearance.

The makeup work deserves attention because disguise is an important part of the story.

Characters change their appearances during their activities, and in some cases the transformation is enough to make you take a second look before recognising the actor.

 The Performances

Deepak Tijori, playing Mentor, fits comfortably into the film. He handles the emotional scenes well, particularly his confrontation with Jayraj Mehta at the police station. A few expressions in the final section also bring some light comedy to his character. His comeback in the Gujarati film has excited the Gujarati audience.

Bhaumik Sampat is convincing as VD. Comedy, emotion and action are part of his role, and he handles the changes without looking uncomfortable.

Jinal Belani, who plays Kavya, is very effective in the emotional scenes and action scenes. She has given herself an opportunity to make an impact during the fight in the container yard, where the character’s anger comes through clearly on her face.

Om Bhatt fits his role well.

The appearance of Samvedna, a familiar face from Gujarati cinema, may take a moment to register after her long absence from the films. Her dialogue delivery gives away her identity, as her style of acting manner remains recognisable.

Muni Jha plays the police commissioner with restraint. The character remains under pressure for much of the film, and the performance stays controlled rather than turning towards broad comedy.

Bhavya Gandhi, Bhavini Jani, Smit Joshi, Morli Patel and Premli Yagnik handle their smaller roles adequately.

Raunaq Kamdar, my superstar of the Gujarati film industry, makes an impression as a police inspector. He fits the role well and manages to suggest the character’s profession even though the film gives him limited time in uniform. There are also moments where he uses an understated style, along with a few lighter scenes. He should look for more police officer roles; it suits him quite well. His sunglasses in one sequence may remind some viewers of Anil Kapoor.

Dharmendra Gohil, one of the strongest performances as Jayraj Mehta. Gohil gives the villain enough menace to make his character believable as a dangerous man. He gets room to play the negative side of the role without holding back, and that freedom works in his favour. His expressions often say more than the dialogue.

What Could Be Better (The Not-So-Good Stuff)

  1. The logic and time taken to convert and transfer the crores of Cryptocurrency from one account to another are too fast to do and too slow to digest.
  2. The flashbacks are a bit long and provoked me to take out my mobile from my pocket and start scrolling.
  3. The sound effects and the movements are not synchronised; I will give you one example: Kayva is shaking the bottle of some shake, and the speed of the bottle shaking and the related sound effects do not sync with each other.
  4. The lyrics of the songs are not mesmerising and break the story.
  5. The way the first robbery has been pictured did not give any excitement and was not convincing.

What I Loved (The Good Stuff)

  1. The concept, content, the genre, and the subject are some of the strong points of the movie.
  2. “The performances of the lead star cast, Deepak Tijori, Jhinal Belani, Dharmendra Gohil, Bhaumik Sampat and my superstar Raunaq Kamdar all of them have performed exceedingly well.
  3. The VFX is too good compared to other Gujarati Movies.
  4. The camera angles and the close-up shots of each Chiranjeevi enhances the excitement.
  5. Some comedy punches are very fine and make the audience smile.
  6. The thrill will keep you engaged.”
  7. The comeback of Bollywood actor Deepak Tijori in the Gujarati film industry after 25 years.
  8. The action scenes are very good, especially of Jhinal Belani; her expressions are the key to excite the audience.

Newz Daddy Ratings: ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5 out of 5 stars)

 The Verdict

Get Set Go does not offer a highly complicated story, and its screenplay does not depend on big twists. Some of the crime and cryptocurrency details also lack the complexity you may expect from this type of story.

The screenplay keeps things moving, the editing avoids unnecessary pauses, the cinematography gives the action and tension enough visual force, and the performances keep the characters interesting.

For viewers looking for a Gujarati crime thriller that moves quickly and does not demand too much from its plot, Get Set Go offers a reasonably entertaining watch. It is the concept, pace, and performance that carry the film.
