Indian Army Steps Up Flood Rescue Operations as Heavy Rain Continues Across Gujarat
The Indian Army has expanded its flood relief operations across Gujarat after days of heavy rainfall left several districts underwater, forcing people from their homes and disrupting normal life. Working alongside the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local authorities and other emergency agencies, Army teams have been sent to some of the worst affected areas to help rescue stranded residents and support relief work.
The deployment has been carried out under the Southern Command as part of the Army’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) response. Relief and Rescue Columns, supported by Engineer and Medical teams, have been moved into Navsari, Valsad, Silvassa and Ahmedabad. Additional teams remain on standby in Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad so they can be sent quickly if conditions worsen or fresh requests for assistance are received.
The first rescue operations began late on the night of 23 July 2026 in flood-hit parts of Navsari district, where rising water cut off several communities. According to the Army, rescue teams have safely evacuated 43 stranded civilians from flooded locations. The search and rescue effort remains in progress as officials continue to monitor changing weather conditions and water levels.
Flooding has become one of Gujarat’s most serious seasonal challenges during the south-west monsoon. While the state often experiences intense rainfall between June and September, unusually heavy downpours over a short period can overwhelm rivers, drainage systems and low-lying urban areas. Districts in south Gujarat, including Navsari and Valsad, have experienced repeated flooding in recent years because of their river networks, coastal geography and periods of exceptionally heavy rain.

Emergency responders say rapid deployment is critical during such disasters because floodwaters can rise within hours, leaving residents trapped inside homes or isolated in villages. Engineer teams help clear blocked routes, strengthen temporary access points and support movement through affected areas, while Army medical personnel provide first aid and emergency treatment when local health services come under pressure.
The Army’s flood response is being carried out in coordination with the civil administration, which remains responsible for disaster management within the state. The NDRF and SDRF specialise in search and rescue operations during natural disasters, while local police, fire services, municipal authorities and health departments provide evacuation support, temporary shelters, food supplies and medical assistance.
India has developed a structured disaster response system over the past two decades following several major natural disasters. The Disaster Management Act, 2005 created the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and led to the formation of the NDRF, giving the country dedicated specialist teams trained in rescue operations during floods, earthquakes, cyclones and other emergencies. The Indian Army continues to play an important supporting role whenever state governments request additional assistance during large-scale disasters.
The Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief framework, commonly known as HADR, allows the Armed Forces to provide immediate support during natural calamities. Army units regularly conduct rescue operations during floods, landslides, cyclones and earthquakes across different parts of the country. Their role includes evacuating stranded people, transporting essential supplies, restoring communication links, providing temporary medical care and helping local authorities reach isolated communities.
In Gujarat, monsoon flooding can affect transport, electricity supply, drinking water systems and agricultural land. Roads may become impassable, schools can remain closed, and businesses often face temporary disruption until floodwaters recede. Farmers are especially vulnerable because standing crops may suffer significant damage after prolonged flooding.
Weather experts have repeatedly advised residents in flood-prone districts to follow official warnings, avoid entering fast-moving water and move to safer locations whenever evacuation orders are issued. Emergency authorities also urge people to avoid travelling through waterlogged roads, as even shallow floodwaters can hide open drains, damaged roads or strong currents.
The Army said its personnel remain prepared to respond as the situation develops. Additional relief columns positioned in Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad are ready for immediate deployment if further assistance is needed in other districts.
In a statement, the Indian Army said, “The Indian Army remains committed to extending timely assistance to the affected population and working in close synergy with the civil administration to safeguard lives and support relief efforts during the ongoing flood situation.”
As rescue operations continue, the immediate priority remains reaching people stranded by floodwaters, ensuring access to medical care and helping local authorities restore essential services in the affected regions.
