IIT Bhubaneswar MoU Ignites Future of Indian Knowledge

IIT Bhubaneswar MoU Fuels Powerful Growth in Indian Knowledge Systems

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bhaktivedanta Research Centre (BRC), Kolkata, to foster academic collaboration in the areas of Indian Knowledge Systems, philosophy, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary research. The MoU was signed by Prof. Dinakar Pasla, Dean (Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy), IIT Bhubaneswar, and Dr Sumanta Rudra, Dean Academics and Trustee, Bhaktivedanta Research Centre, on 19th March 2026. Dr Akshaya Kumar Rath, Associate Professor; Dr Naresh Chandra Sahu, Associate Professor; Shri Pradeep Kumar Sahoo, Deputy Registrar (Continuing Education, Alumni, Corporate & International Relations) were present on the occasion.

This partnership brings together two institutions with very different but complementary strengths. IIT Bhubaneswar is known for its strong base in science, engineering, and technology. Over the years, IITs have also been expanding into the humanities and social sciences to create more balanced learning. On the other hand, the Bhaktivedanta Research Centre in Kolkata is widely recognised for its rich collection of ancient Indian manuscripts, especially those linked to philosophy, culture, and classical texts. By joining hands, both institutions are trying to build a bridge between traditional wisdom and modern academic methods.

The MoU reflects a shared commitment between the two institutions to promote education, research, and knowledge dissemination by leveraging their complementary strengths. In recent years, there has been a growing interest across the world in Indian Knowledge Systems. These include areas like ancient philosophy, ethics, environmental thinking, and holistic living. Many scholars believe that these ideas can offer fresh solutions to modern global challenges such as climate change, mental health, and sustainable development. This collaboration fits into that larger global trend.

Under this collaboration, IIT Bhubaneswar and BRC will jointly undertake a range of academic and research initiatives. These include organising conferences, workshops, seminars, lecture series, and public outreach programmes. Such activities are important because they allow students, researchers, and the general public to engage with ideas beyond textbooks. Workshops and seminars also help young scholars learn directly from experts, which can shape their future research paths. Public outreach programmes, in particular, play a key role in taking academic knowledge beyond classrooms and into society.

The partnership will also facilitate joint research projects, collaborative publications, and the development of interdisciplinary scholarship integrating humanities, social sciences, and technology. Interdisciplinary research is becoming more important today because real-world problems are often complex and cannot be solved by one field alone. For example, studying ancient texts may require not only language skills but also digital tools for preservation and analysis. By combining technical expertise from IIT with the deep cultural knowledge of BRC, the collaboration aims to produce meaningful and practical research outcomes.

A key focus of the MoU is the advancement of digital humanities and manuscript studies, including efforts in digitisation, textual analysis, and the creation of digital research tools and repositories. India has a vast heritage of manuscripts, many of which are fragile and at risk of being lost. Digitisation helps preserve these texts for future generations while also making them accessible to researchers worldwide. Textual analysis using modern software tools can uncover patterns, meanings, and connections that may not be easily visible through manual study. Digital repositories also allow scholars from different parts of the world to access rare documents without physical travel.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Pasla said: “The collaboration aims to strengthen scholarly exchange and capacity building while contributing to the growing global discourse on Indian knowledge traditions, ethics, sustainability, and civilisational studies.” His remarks highlight how this partnership is not limited to academic work alone but also aims to build skills and knowledge among students and researchers. Capacity building is especially important in emerging fields like digital humanities, where trained experts are still limited.

Dr Sumanta Rudra, Dean (Academics), BRC, stated that the collaboration will significantly strengthen the Indian Knowledge System, with both institutions committed to meaningful future contributions. His statement reflects the confidence that such partnerships can revive and represent traditional knowledge in ways that are relevant today. It also shows a long-term vision where both institutions continue to work together on new ideas and projects.

This partnership marks a significant step towards bridging traditional knowledge systems with contemporary academic and technological frameworks, reinforcing IIT Bhubaneswar’s commitment to interdisciplinary excellence and cultural scholarship. In a time when education is rapidly evolving, such collaborations show how institutions can respect the past while preparing for the future. By combining ancient wisdom with modern tools, the initiative has the potential to create knowledge that is both rooted and forward-looking.
