Indian Air Force Band Bhuj Event Held Ahead of I-Day

IAF band brings Independence Day programme to Bhuj Town Hall

The Indian Air Force’s South Western Air Command (SWAC) took its music and public outreach programme to Bhuj on Sunday, August 9, with a performance at Town Hall ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day.

The programme was attended by Keshubhai Shivdas Patel, MLA from the Bhuj constituency, along with senior civil and military officials, district administration representatives, students and members of the public.

The Air Force band performed patriotic songs, military tunes and instrumental pieces during the programme. A digital presentation on Indian Air Force operations was also shown to the audience. The programme gave visitors a public view of one part of Air Force life that is usually seen during military ceremonies, parades and official functions.

For Bhuj, the event also carried a local connection with the armed forces. The town and the wider Kutch region have a long association with military establishments, including Indian Air Force facilities under the South Western Air Command. SWAC is headquartered in Gandhinagar and its area of responsibility covers Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch and parts of Rajasthan. The command was raised on July 23, 1980, and its headquarters moved from Jodhpur to Gandhinagar in 1998.

The Air Force has used music and public events as a way of meeting civilians outside its operational bases. In 2025, Indian Air Force bands performed at several public locations around the country as part of Independence Day programmes. The locations included the War Memorial in Guwahati, Shanivar Wada in Pune, Shanghumukham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram and other public venues. The Air Force has described its bands as part of its wider public awareness work under the ‘Know Your Forces’ initiative.

A similar approach has also been used through air awareness programmes aimed at school and college students. In December 2022, Air Force Station Thanjavur held a ‘Know Your Forces’ campaign that included aircraft and weapons displays and other activities for students from 15 schools and colleges. The stated purpose was to help the public understand the Air Force and encourage young people to consider careers in the armed forces.

The Bhuj programme followed this wider pattern of taking information about the armed forces into public spaces. The music formed the main part of the evening, while the digital display provided information about Indian Air Force operations.

The programme also included a presentation by the IAF band from South Western Air Command. Its repertoire covered patriotic music, martial compositions and popular instrumental numbers. Such performances have been a part of public-facing Air Force programmes for years. In Gujarat, the SWAC band has previously performed around Independence Day. In August 2015, its ceremonial band held a public performance in Ahmedabad ahead of Independence Day.

A 2017 Independence Day programme in Jamnagar also included a South Western Air Command band concert at Lakhota Lake. That event was held alongside a public display of Indian Air Force aircraft, equipment and other assets, with schoolchildren among those attending.

The Bhuj programme had another important part. Veteran gallantry award recipients of the Indian Army and Veer Naris were honoured during the event.

Veer Naris are widows of members of the armed forces who died while serving the country. Honouring them at public military events provides a direct link between serving personnel, veterans and civilian communities. It also allows younger audiences to learn about the families connected to military service.

Students were among those present at Town Hall. Their participation fits with the Air Force’s wider public contact programmes, which have often included young people. The aim is to give students a better understanding of the armed forces and the career opportunities available to them. Public programmes can also help young audiences see military service beyond aircraft, uniforms and combat duties.

The South Western Air Command has a particularly close link with Gujarat. Its headquarters is in Gandhinagar, while Bhuj is among the air bases associated with the command. The command was formed in 1980 after being created from the No. 1 Operational Group of the Western Air Command. Its responsibilities have included air defence in the south-western sector.

The leadership of SWAC has also changed in 2026. Air Marshal Tejinder Singh took charge as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the command in January, before Air Marshal P V Shivanand assumed the post in July 2026. Shivanand was previously Senior Air Staff Officer at the Central Air Command and has about 2,800 hours of flying experience on the MiG-21 and IL-76 AWACS, according to a report on his appointment.

The presence of Keshubhai Shivdas Patel also connected the programme with the local administration and elected representation. Patel has represented Bhuj in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly since winning the seat in the 2022 state election.

As the evening progressed, members of the audience joined the band in patriotic songs. The organisers said the public participation was intended to strengthen contact between civilians and military personnel.

For the Indian Air Force, programmes such as the Bhuj performance offer a public-facing side to an organisation mainly associated with air operations and national defence. For the people attending, the evening brought military music, information about Air Force operations and recognition of veterans and Veer Naris into a civic setting.

With Independence Day approaching on August 15, the Bhuj event formed part of the activities taking place across the country in the run-up to the national celebration.
