Indian women’s kabaddi World Cup win sparks national pride

Newz Daddy Sports Updates

The Indian women’s kabaddi team was honoured in Mumbai on Friday by the Pro Kabaddi League and JioStar after their return from Dhaka, Bangladesh, where they won the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup on 24 November. India beat Chinese Taipei 35–28 in the final to win the trophy for the second time in a row. This win proves India’s strength in women’s kabaddi on the world stage as they finished the tournament undefeated.

The World Cup in Dhaka saw teams from 11 countries taking part, showing how the sport is growing internationally. India won all their group matches and then beat Iran 33–21 in the semi-final. Chinese Taipei also remained unbeaten in their group and reached the final after beating hosts Bangladesh 25–18.

The Indian women’s team has a long history of success. They are one of the most successful sides in international kabaddi, having won multiple World Cups and Asian Championship titles over many years. Their consistent performance underlines India’s deep talent pool and strong coaching systems.

At the felicitation event in Mumbai, Ishan Chatterjee, Chief Executive Officer for Sports at JioStar, praised the team’s achievement. He said that 2025 has been a historic year for women’s sport in India and that the team’s success will inspire many young girls to take up the game. JioStar is a major media and entertainment company that shows kabaddi matches and other sports to millions of viewers, helping boost the sport’s visibility.

Pro Kabaddi League Chairman and Business Head of Mashal Sports, Anupam Goswami, spoke about the future of women’s kabaddi. He said the federation brought back the Women’s World Cup after 12 years, showing that the sport is moving forward in the right direction. He added that the win is not just another trophy but a shared responsibility to grow the game even more.

Goswami also talked about creating a Women’s Kabaddi League. He said that rushing into a new league is not the right approach. Instead, the focus should be on building a solid league with players who want to be part of it and a structure that can support women’s kabaddi in the long term.

Head coach V. Tejeswini Bai spoke about how much the team has grown. This is the third time she has coached a medal-winning team, and she said every win feels special. She underlined that their success came from months of disciplined training and preparation.

India’s captain, Ritu Negi, shared her feelings about the final. She said she was frustrated by an injury that limited her play, but praised her teammates for stepping up. The team’s unity and determination helped them execute their game plan. The win and the reaction from across India, including from the Prime Minister, made the team feel proud that their hard work represents the whole country.

On the global stage, Vibhor Vineet Jain, President of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI), spoke about kabaddi’s growth worldwide. Teams like Chinese Taipei and Iran are raising the level of competition, showing that kabaddi is no longer just an Indian sport. This increase in international participation helps make the sport stronger and more exciting around the world.

The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is one of the biggest contributors to the sport’s popularity in India today. Founded in 2014 and organised by Mashal Sports with JioStar as a key partner, the league brought fresh energy to kabaddi and helped make it a favourite among sports fans. The PKL has a strong online presence and is streamed on platforms such as JioHotstar, bringing kabaddi to a wide audience.

The felicitation event marked more than a celebration of one team’s win. It showed the rising momentum for women’s kabaddi in India and the strong support institutions are giving to the sport. That support signals a new and exciting phase for kabaddi as it continues to grow at home and abroad.
