April 2022: As a part of Apollo’s initiative of providing advanced treatment to people across the country, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi conducted a Press Conference with the healthcare fraternity of Ahmedabad at Hotel Fairfield by Marriot. Lead by, Dr. M S Kanwar, Lead Lung Transplant and COVID Team, Senior Consultant & Advisor Department of Pulmonology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals the PRESS CONFERENCE addressed the complexities of Lung diseases along with the advanced treatment modalities available in India.
Addressing the Press Conference, Dr. M S Kanwar, Lead Lung Transplant and COVID Team, Senior Consultant & Pulmonologist, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals said, “The lung transplant is not just surgery but a process starting with extensive pre-lung transplant workup and optimal stabilization of the patients of end-stage lung diseases like IPF, COPD, Emphysema, Covid Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, and many others. It also involves lung and general rehabilitation, optimal oxygen therapy and positive pressure ventilation, ECMO, etc. Lung transplant surgery is complex and so is immediate and long-term post-operative care. Lung transplants which have been popular in advanced countries for decades with a constant annual increase in the number of lung transplants are now available in India also with comparable outcomes. Several international patients from other countries are currently under our treatment at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals or waiting to be stabilized and transferred to our Hospitals in New Delhi for their lung transplant, in most cases a double lung transplant, said Dr. Kanwar.
Indraprastha Apollo Hospital is already a leading transplant centre for kidney, liver, and bone marrow and has also accomplished heart transplants. According to Dr. Kanwar, the chief lung transplant surgeon in their program has about 170 lung and heart-lung transplants to his credit and we pride in one brilliant infrastructure and critical care that are essential components for a robust lung transplant program.”
Hence, patients should not let their guard down in terms of preventive health check-ups. Today the treatment modalities for treating the most complex lung diseases are available in India. As a reason, the patients should do away with the hesitancy of delaying diagnosis due to the fear of being diagnosed with any complex disease. A disease treated early always has better outcomes in terms of patient recovery.
