Honouring Ela Ben Bhatt’s Legacy in Women’s Empowerment

The renowned Indian social reformer Ela Ben Bhatt devoted her life to empowering and assisting women, especially those employed in the unorganised sector. Her goal was to help these women improve their own and their families’ lives by giving them social and financial freedom. She is one of the most important leaders in women’s empowerment because of the millions of people she has inspired around the world.

Elaben, who was born in Ahmedabad in 1933, was raised in a household that was deeply committed to social problems. After practising law, her father, Sumant Bhatt, was appointed Charity Commissioner for Gujarat and Bombay. Vanalila Vyas, her mother, was an active member of the All India Women’s Conference and promoted social change and education. Elaben was greatly impacted by her upbringing, which inspired her to change society in a significant way.

Establishing SEWA: A Lighthouse of Hope for Women

Ela Ben Bhatt established the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in 1972. SEWA began with the straightforward but effective goal of assisting women in working for themselves by providing them with the resources they required to become independent. With more than two million members spread over 18 states and even neighbouring countries, SEWA is currently among the biggest cooperatives in India. It now serves as a global model for women’s empowerment, influencing related organisations and movements.

Elaben established ground-breaking initiatives through SEWA that gave women access to vital resources, financial support, and skill development. Through these initiatives, women were able to obtain better employment, receive equitable compensation, and live honourable lives. Beyond providing financial assistance, SEWA’s mission also encouraged women’s emotional autonomy and sense of community.

International Acknowledgement and Support for Women’s Rights

The influence of Elaben extended well beyond India. She became a member of The Elders, a global leadership organisation established by Nelson Mandela, in 2007. This group, which is made up of well-known international personalities, works to advance justice, peace, and human rights everywhere. Elaben shared her distinct viewpoint on social transformation and women’s empowerment as a member.

She co-founded Women’s World Banking, a global organisation that assists women in accessing financial services, and she also worked as an advisor to the World Bank. Her voice made it to the UN General Assembly, where she spoke in favour of fair treatment and equal opportunities for women everywhere.

Carrying on the Tradition: The Bhatt Family’s Commitment to Social Change

Elaben’s dedication to social reform has been continued by her family. Her work is continued by her son, Mihir R. Bhatt, a well-known scholar and architect who focuses on socially conscious projects. Reema Nanavaty, his spouse, is also an enthusiastic supporter of women’s emancipation. Reema, a Padma Shri recipient, has dedicated more than thirty years to bringing women together in Indian cooperatives, businesses, and trade unions. Mihir and Reema together represent Elaben’s principles, advocating for social fairness and significant change.

Jay Patel and Elaben’s Special Meeting

Hollywood producer Jay Patel got the chance to meet Elaben Bhatt in 2022. It was a moment that changed his life. Jay called her a “modern-day Gandhian,” recalling her wisdom and humility. He admired her because she exemplified the qualities of self-reliance and non-violence, which are essential to women’s empowerment.

Elaben’s simplicity and sincerity impressed Jay and director Abhishek Dudhaiya during their nearly three-hour chat. They were deeply impacted by Elaben’s warm smile, her gift of ginger masala tea, and her maternal love. “Her enthusiasm was motivating,” Jay thought. “She reminded us that humility and compassion are the foundations of true change.”

Remembering ElaBen – Tributes from Leaders and Admirers

People in India and throughout the world were greatly saddened by Elaben’s passing. In his homage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called her a long-time supporter of social justice and women’s empowerment. He noted in his message that she will be remembered for her dedication to social progress and the enduring influence of her efforts.

Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress were among the other leaders who conveyed their condolences and respect. Ela Ben changed the lives of millions of women by dedicating her life to Gandhian principles, according to Rahul Gandhi. Chief Ministers Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan and Bhupendra Patel of Gujarat also expressed their appreciation for her contributions in their messages.

An Enduring Legacy of Empowerment and Social Reform

Those who are dedicated to women’s rights, equality, and justice are still motivated by Ela Ben Bhatt’s life and contributions. Future generations can learn from her experience as a visionary leader. In addition to paving the way for hope and resiliency, SEWA and the projects she spearheaded have had a long-lasting influence on international efforts for equality and empowerment.

Elaben’s commitment has made a lasting impression on the world, serving as a constant reminder that bravery, empathy, and group strength can bring about change.
